There is no single extension cord that is best for every microwave. Check the operating manual for your exact model first: some manufacturers advise against extension cords, while others specify conditions for using one. If the manual allows it, use a grounded three-wire cord rated at least as high as the microwave’s nameplate rating. For a permanent reach problem, ask a qualified electrician about installing a suitable outlet.
Can you use an extension cord with a microwave?
It depends on the microwave. GE Appliances says, “We strongly recommend that an extension cord not be used with a Microwave due to potential safety hazards under certain conditions.” If a cord is used, GE specifies a UL-approved, three-wire grounding-type appliance cord with a marked rating at least as high as the microwave’s rating. GE Appliances’ extension-cord guidance also says to arrange the cord to avoid pulling or tripping hazards.
Panasonic gives conditional guidance: when an extension cord is necessary, it should have three wires, a three-blade grounding plug and a three-slot receptacle, with a marked rating equal to or greater than the appliance rating. The page also specifies a dedicated grounded outlet for the models it covers. Check Panasonic’s guidance alongside the operating instructions for your exact model.
Whirlpool advises using a grounded three-prong outlet and not using an extension cord or adapter. If the supply cord is too short, it recommends consulting an expert about outlet installation. Whirlpool’s outlet guidance is specific to the models and instructions it covers.

These recommendations differ, so do not treat a general rule or another microwave’s instructions as approval for yours. Follow the exact model’s manual and grounding requirements. If it prohibits an extension cord, plug the microwave directly into the required outlet.
What gauge extension cord do you need?
There is no universal gauge answer. Read the microwave’s electrical nameplate and the cord’s tag or packaging, then confirm that the cord’s marked rating is at least as high as the appliance’s rating and meets the manual’s requirements. A cord’s capacity depends on its length and wire gauge; a thicker-looking cord or a familiar amp rating alone does not establish that it is suitable.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) publishes these general current and gauge ranges by cord length. They are general extension-cord guidance, not a microwave-specific endorsement; the microwave manual and cord rating remain controlling. See ESFI’s extension-cord guidance.
| Cord length | General gauge/current guidance from ESFI |
|---|---|
| 25–50 feet | 16 gauge for 1–13 amps; 14 gauge for 14–15 amps; 12–10 gauge for 16–20 amps. |

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to check the cord tag or packaging for its capacity and notes that overloading, connecting appliances that draw more power than the cord can handle, or using a damaged cord can create a fire hazard. Its pamphlet gives a general minimum of 16 AWG, except 18 AWG cords with fuse protection; that minimum does not prove a cord can safely power a particular microwave. Read the CPSC extension-cord pamphlet.

What to check if the manual permits a cord
- Grounding: Choose a three-wire cord with a three-prong grounding plug and a three-slot receptacle, as required by the applicable manufacturer guidance. Never remove the grounding pin or force a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet. Panasonic and ESFI provide grounding and safety guidance.
- Capacity: Compare the microwave’s nameplate rating with the cord’s marked rating. The cord must meet or exceed the appliance rating and any requirements in the manual.
- Approval: Follow any certification requirement in the manual. GE specifies UL approval; ESFI recommends cords approved by an independent testing laboratory such as UL, Intertek or CSA.
- Length and condition: Choose a length and gauge whose capacity suits the appliance, and do not use a cord that is damaged or feels hot.
How to use an extension cord more safely
ESFI says extension cords are for temporary use, not permanent wiring. CPSC warns against unsafe routing and damaged cords. If the microwave’s manual allows a cord, follow these precautions:
- Do not overload the cord or use it to power multiple appliances.
- Do not connect one extension cord to another.
- Keep the cord uncovered and do not run it through walls, doorways, ceilings or floors, or beneath rugs or furniture.
- Stop using a cord that is hot or damaged; replace a damaged cord.
- Place it so it will not be pulled or create a tripping hazard.
Can you plug a microwave into a power strip?
The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that a power strip is suitable for microwaves. Do not assume a power strip is acceptable because it has multiple outlets or a high rating. Check the exact microwave manual; if it does not explicitly support that setup, use the required outlet directly.
What if the microwave cord is too short?
If the manual prohibits extension cords, or the outlet is ungrounded, unsuitable or too far away, do not improvise with an adapter, remove a grounding pin or chain cords. Ask a qualified electrician whether a properly grounded outlet—and, where the model requires it, a dedicated outlet—can be installed near the microwave. GE and Whirlpool both direct readers toward an appropriate outlet or expert help when reach is a problem. GE Appliances · Whirlpool
