Flooring forecasts for 2026 point toward warmer wood colors, wider planks, tactile matte finishes, and patterned layouts such as herringbone. Natural stone looks and expressive color are also getting attention, alongside practical flooring options for rooms where moisture or wear matters. These are expert and industry predictions—not measured proof that every homeowner is choosing the same styles.
What flooring trends are experts predicting for 2026?
Several forecasts converge on natural-looking materials and warmer, more tactile finishes, while leaving room for personal choices. Houzz reported new collections shown at TISE, the European Producers of Laminate Flooring (EPLF) outlined an industry outlook, Floor & Decor published its own retail forecast, and Veranda interviewed designers. Each offers a view of direction, not national adoption data.
1. Warmer wood tones
Honey, caramel, and chestnut tones are appearing alongside white oak and other natural-looking woods. Houzz quotes Mohawk’s Michelle Dailey: “For this year, we’re really seeing tones warm up.” Designer Ellie Christopher told Veranda: “Wide plank white oak floors will remain popular, but rather than the super whitewashed look, we’re seeing honey, caramel, and chestnut tones taking hold.” This is a shift in emphasis, not evidence that gray floors have disappeared.
2. Longer, wider planks
EPLF expects longer and wider formats to feature in laminate, and Houzz’s TISE coverage notes wide engineered-wood examples: Anderson Tuftex Artisan Oak at 7½ inches wide and Hallmark Avenue at 9½ inches. Those are specifications for particular products, not a universal standard. Wider boards can make a room read as less visually busy, but the right format depends on the room’s proportions and the product’s installation requirements.

3. Matte, tactile finishes
Matte surfaces and more realistic textures are another recurring direction. Houzz describes plank finishes that look more textured and rough-hewn than glossy and smooth; EPLF likewise expects realistic textures and matte finishes. The appeal is visual and tactile. Texture should not be assumed to conceal every scratch or make cleaning effortless: check the manufacturer’s care instructions for the selected product.
4. Herringbone, parquet, and other patterns
Patterned layouts are appearing across several material categories. Veranda’s Mindy Kelson O’Connor says, “While wide plank floors are still beloved, herringbone and even more intricate parquet are some of the most popular flooring pattern choices right now.” EPLF includes herringbone among distinctive laminate layouts, while Floor & Decor shows the pattern in both solid hardwood and rigid-core luxury vinyl plank. A pattern changes the installation plan and the finished room’s visual rhythm, so discuss layout and product suitability before work begins.

5. Earthy tile and stone looks
Floor & Decor’s 2026 forecast emphasizes nature-inspired colors and textures and names its Vetta Elements porcelain tile in Luxe Earth as its Tile of the Year collection. That designation is the retailer’s own selection, not an independent award. Houzz also reports natural stone and increasingly realistic looks inspired by marble, concrete, limestone, and travertine.
6. Performance flooring alongside real wood
Forecasts include engineered hardwood, laminate, and vinyl as well as traditional wood. One Floor & Decor example is NuCore Paloma, a rigid-core luxury vinyl plank described by the retailer as waterproof and shown in a herringbone layout. Treat performance language as product-specific: verify what the manufacturer’s warranty and installation guide mean by terms such as “waterproof,” and confirm suitability for the room and subfloor. No category is automatically the best choice throughout a home.

7. More personal statement floors—and renewed carpet interest
Floor & Decor predicts a 1970s revival, bold color, and personalized combinations. Veranda’s designers discuss checkered stone, colored tile, painted floors, and renewed interest in wall-to-wall carpet. These options suit homeowners seeking a more expressive room; they are not a consensus prescription for every house. Use a strong pattern or color where it works with the room’s light and surrounding finishes.
Are gray floors going out of style?
No source in these forecasts establishes that gray has vanished. Houzz reports warm midtones prominently in new hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl collections, while some gray options remain and may lean brown. If you like gray, judge a specific sample in the room’s actual light and alongside cabinetry, walls, and trim rather than rejecting it solely because warmer colors are receiving more attention.

How should you choose a 2026-inspired floor for your home?
Use the trend as a starting point, then choose for the room and the complete project. Mindy Kelson O’Connor told Veranda: “Consider the light in the space, the surrounding materials, and the overall design language throughout the house far more than any trend.”
- Start with the room. Consider moisture exposure, daily use, and the conditions of the subfloor before narrowing the material choices.
- Compare material and finish. Decide whether real wood, engineered wood, laminate, resilient flooring, or tile fits the use and look you want. Read the exact product’s specifications and cleaning guidance.
- Check dimensions and layout. Compare plank widths and lengths or decide whether a pattern such as herringbone suits the room. Confirm the proposed installation method and subfloor requirements.
- Review product-specific protection. Read the warranty and define what any performance claim covers rather than relying on broad labels such as “scratch-proof” or “pet-proof.”
- View samples at home. Compare physical samples in the room’s changing natural and artificial light, next to the materials that will remain.
Where sustainability fits
Sustainability appears as a consideration rather than a single defining style direction. EPLF says environmentally responsible materials remain a factor in its laminate outlook; designers quoted by Veranda mention reclaimed wood, cork, bamboo, low-VOC finishes, and nontoxic adhesives as options or concerns. These terms do not by themselves establish a product’s environmental or health performance. Check product documentation for the specific material and claim.
