Stop and contact a qualified service professional if the listed checks do not resolve the issue or the next step involves internal components, gas, wiring, or venting.
Use Navien’s NPE-240A manuals and service documents and match them to the model and revision on your rating plate. The code guidance below reflects the NPE condensing water heater User’s Information Manual version 5.3, dated May 23, 2019; it is not a universal code chart for every NPE revision.
Before troubleshooting: record the code and confirm your model
Write down the complete error code shown on the front panel, along with the model and serial number from the rating plate. Navien’s user manual also recommends having the purchase date and installation location/type available when you call Technical Support. Check that the manual you consult matches the unit’s exact model and revision: codes and instructions should not be assumed to apply to every NPE version.
The version 5.3 manual describes pressing the front-panel Reset button as an option for a minor problem. If the fault remains, follow the relevant symptom or code instructions once and escalate rather than repeatedly resetting the heater.

Safe checks for common hot-water symptoms
No water comes out when you open a hot-water tap
- Check that the hot- and cold-water shutoff valves serving the heater are open.
- Check the cold-water inlet filter for blockage, following the exact unit manual’s instructions.
- Look at the front panel for an error code and use the matching code guidance below.
- If freezing is possible, treat it as a potential cause; do not open or repair internal parts yourself.
Water is cold, turns cold, or stays cold
- Check the cold-water inlet filter for blockage.
- The version 5.3 manual calls for at least 0.5 gallons per minute of flow through the heater. If the flow is below that, the heater may not operate as expected.
- Check the front panel for a displayed error code.
- If an external recirculation system is installed, the manual identifies a return-line check valve as a possible issue. Have a qualified professional assess plumbing or valve problems.
Hot water takes too long to reach the fixtures
The manual associates a long wait with external recirculation and describes a return line from the farthest fixture. Recirculation plumbing changes are not a basic DIY adjustment; ask a qualified professional to assess the system and its configuration.
Water is not hot enough
Check the set temperature using the controls described in the manual for your unit. The manual also lists cross-plumbing as a possible cause; diagnosis or correction of plumbing connections is a job for a qualified professional.

What common NPE-240A error codes mean
The following are selected entries from the NPE User’s Information Manual version 5.3 (May 23, 2019), not a complete or current code list for every unit revision. Use the matching documentation from Navien’s downloads page before acting on a code. The owner-level actions shown are limited to those listed by that manual.

The table is selective. The manual also lists sensor, PCB, communication, flow-sensor, and other faults, many of which it directs to Technical Support. Do not infer a remedy for a code that is not listed here; check the exact unit documentation or contact support.

Intake-filter and heat-exchanger maintenance
Intake air filter
The version 5.3 user manual says to clean the air intake filter every 3–4 months and notes that a clogged filter can stop operation and produce Error Code 110. Treat that interval as an instruction from that manual version, not a universal schedule; confirm the maintenance directions for your unit’s exact revision.
Heat-exchanger flushing
The manual describes flushing as somewhat complicated and warns that improper maintenance may affect warranty coverage. It outlines equipment including a bucket of at least five gallons, tubing, a circulation pump, and cleaning solution, with circulation for at least 45 minutes followed by rinsing. Because the task involves equipment and internal water connections, use an authorized technician or licensed professional if you are unsure. Do not assume any particular pump kit is Navien-approved or compatible without checking its specifications.

When to stop and call for service
Navien says: “Navien strongly recommends that all installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, service, and repair work be performed by qualified and properly licensed professionals.” The manufacturer warns that this work can involve gas, combustion, venting, electrical, water, plumbing, and mechanical hazards, and that improper work may affect warranty coverage. Use the official NPE-240A documentation page to find current model documents.
- Call a qualified, properly licensed service professional if a fault returns after the manual’s listed action, if the manual directs you to Technical Support, or if troubleshooting would require internal access or work on gas, electrical, combustion, or venting systems.
- If the heater has been submerged in water, do not use it; the user manual calls for a qualified service technician and replacement.
- If overheating occurs or gas does not shut off, the manual says to shut off gas at the manual valve. Do not attempt to repair the gas system yourself.
The version 5.3 manual lists Navien Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794 and says to contact support first for warranty service. Confirm current contact details on Navien’s official site before calling.
