These 57 ideas are starting points, not a checklist—choose a scale and theme that suit your home, keep the route to the door clear, and make sure outdoor items are secured and suitable for the weather.
How can I decorate my front porch for Halloween?
Build the entry around the door and keep steps, landings, and the route visitors use free of props and cords. A small number of repeated colors or motifs can make a compact porch feel intentional.
- Frame the door with orange and purple lights.
- Arrange removable black-paper bats around the doorway.
- Make a “beware” entry with a handmade sign and a few lanterns.
- Wrap porch columns in gauze for a mummy-house effect.
- Group carved or faux pumpkins in graduated sizes beside the door.
- Set a skeleton in a porch chair as a welcoming host.
- Create a witch’s doorstep with a broom, cauldron prop, and hat.
- Hang a lightweight ghost above the porch, secured clear of the walking route.
- Place faux cobwebs on a contained porch feature, away from paths and flames.
- Use a dark doormat and coordinated doorway accents for a simple monochrome scene.
- Put flameless lanterns at the sides of the entrance.
- Add cardboard silhouettes in the windows to give the doorway a haunted-house frame.
How do I decorate my yard for Halloween?
Use the lawn, fence, and walkway as separate zones: a visible focal scene in the yard, details along a boundary, and low lighting only where it helps people see the route. Keep props out of the path, and secure lightweight pieces against wind.
- Line the edge of a clear walkway with low battery lights.
- Set up a small graveyard using lightweight tombstone props.
- Stage a skeleton emerging from a shallow-looking “grave” made from fabric and props.
- Place a giant spider prop on a lawn feature, outside the path.
- Group a web and spider on a fence or shrub.
- Make a pumpkin patch grouping with pumpkins, leaves, and a simple sign.
- Create a scarecrow scene with a weather-suitable support and secure placement.
- Arrange zombie hands or bones as a contained lawn vignette.
- Set up a ghost family using secured lightweight figures.
- Place a black-cat silhouette by a safe, visible yard edge.
- Make a cauldron scene among stable props, away from trip routes.
- Suggest a “witch landing” with a broom and hat near a tree.
- Set oversized eyes in a shrub or window facing the street.
- Create a monster-mouth effect around a garage opening using removable decor.
- Add a skeletal dog or another small figure beside a larger prop to create a sense of scale.
- Run paper or weather-suitable bats along a fence.
- Build a pirate graveyard or shipwreck vignette with lightweight props.
- Make a friendly pumpkin-and-ghost garden for younger visitors.
What can I put on the facade, windows, and fence?
Windows and fences provide a backdrop for scenes without using much ground space. Choose a few visible motifs rather than covering every surface, and keep window treatments from blocking visibility from inside.

- Use outdoor-rated orange string lights around a porch feature.
- Add purple lights to a shrub or fence section.
- Point a tested outdoor spotlight at a wall silhouette.
- Use battery-operated flameless candles in pumpkins.
- Wash the facade with color using outdoor lighting labeled for that use.
- Put reflective accents on low, non-trip display pieces so they remain visible after dark.
- Use glow sticks or battery lights in a contained pumpkin grouping.
- Choose one focal light effect and keep the rest of the scene relatively dim.
- Use a lighted inflatable as the main yard focal point, secured and clear of the path.
- Place a motion-activated effect where it will not startle people into the walking route.

How do I keep an outdoor Halloween display safe?
Decorations can create trip, fire, and electrical hazards if they narrow the entrance or are not suited to outdoor conditions. CPSC advises clearing lawns, steps, and porches of obstacles before trick-or-treating and using flameless candles outdoors, or keeping burning candles away from landings and doorsteps. Its Halloween safety guidance also says to use tested decorative light strands, inspect new and old strands for cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections, discard damaged strands, and avoid overloading extension cords.
- Prefer battery-powered lights or glow sticks in pumpkins and accessible areas. CPSC says never to leave burning candles unattended. Its 2022 safety release reports an average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments annually over the three years preceding the release; 55% were attributed to pumpkin carving and 25% to falls during decorating, costume use, or trick-or-treating.
- For powered outdoor decorations, NFPA recommends GFCI protection, outdoor-rated extension cords, safe cord routing, and decorations rated for outdoor use. It also advises checking cords and choosing products listed by qualified testing laboratories. See NFPA’s Halloween electrical-safety guidance; follow product instructions and local requirements, and consult a qualified electrician for installation-specific questions.
- Secure lights and lightweight props against wind. CPSC’s decorative-lighting guidance recommends secure fastening; check each decoration’s instructions for placement and use.
For context, CPSC’s 2022 release reports annual averages of 5,600 fires associated with candles and 1,600 associated with electrical cords or plugs during 2017–2019. Separately, the National Park Service, relaying NFPA figures in an article last updated in 2016, reports an average of 1,000 fires attributed to Halloween decorations annually, with six civilian deaths, 53 civilian injuries, and $16 million in direct property damage. These are separate figures with different scopes and should not be combined.
