It is a deciduous conifer, so its needles turning yellow and dropping in autumn is normal. The main challenge is establishment: young trees need ample light, steady moisture without prolonged flooding, and protection from competing vegetation.
Check whether your site suits a tamarack
Before planting, assess sunlight, soil moisture, drainage, and mature-tree clearance. Tamarack is native to northern North America and is also called eastern larch or hackmatack. It is best suited to a place where a large tree can receive open sun and the soil does not routinely dry out.
- Sun: Choose full sun. Seedlings are highly shade-intolerant; buildings, dense tree cover, or fast-growing plants can limit their survival and growth. USDA Forest Service Silvics and the Forest Service regeneration review describe the species’ light requirements.
- Moisture and drainage: Aim for soil that stays moist but is not persistently stagnant or deeply flooded. Tamarack commonly grows in wet organic soils, including sphagnum and woody peat, and can also grow well on moist, well-drained mineral soils. Extended drought can cause stress, while prolonged high water or flooding can damage seedlings and trees. The USDA Forest Service species account and USDA NRCS plant guide describe these site conditions.
- Room: Morton Arboretum gives a landscape size of about 40–80 feet tall and 35–40 feet wide. Allow for the crown and avoid conflicts with buildings and overhead features. Its shallow-root-related windthrow risk is another reason to avoid exposed, unsuitable locations. Morton Arboretum’s tamarack profile provides this landscape guidance.
A bog is not a requirement. The USDA Forest Service describes tamarack as occurring most commonly on wet to moist organic soils, but also reports favorable growth on moist, well-drained loams and mineral soils with an organic surface layer. Choose a site for its actual moisture and drainage rather than trying to keep the tree underwater.
Planting a tamarack
Choose a suitable seedling and planting location
Use a plant correctly identified as Larix laricina, and check that the species is suitable for your region. Set it where it will receive full sun and have room to reach its mature spread. If you are buying planting stock, consider the seedling’s condition and whether shipping or planting timing suits your local season; regional nurseries or extension services can advise on local timing.

Give roots moisture and seedlings light
Plant into soil that is moist and aerated, not a persistently flooded or stagnant spot. The Forest Service describes a favorable natural seedbed as warm, moist mineral or organic soil without competing vegetation; seed germinates in moist but unsaturated substrate. These are ecological conditions, not a residential planting calendar or a prescription to sow seed directly in a garden. Forest Service regeneration guidance covers seedbed and establishment conditions.
Keep the root area from drying during establishment, particularly during dry spells. How often supplemental water is needed depends on rainfall, soil, and planting stage; the cited species references do not establish a fixed weekly schedule. Avoid responding to wet-soil stress by adding more water.

Keep nearby vegetation from overtopping the tree
Check the area around the young tree and control brush or other vegetation that shades or overtops it. Tamarack seedlings need open light, and competing vegetation can make an otherwise suitable site unsuitable. Forestry guidance on plantation spacing is intended for managed stands, not as a residential spacing rule; for a yard, use mature crown dimensions and local landscape advice instead. USDA NRCS guidance discusses planting stock and managed plantations.
What to expect as the tree grows
Morton Arboretum lists tamarack at roughly 40–80 feet tall and 35–40 feet wide, with actual mature size varying by site and climate. A USDA Forest Service account published in 1990 reports almost 0.5 m (about 1.5 ft) of annual height growth on good sites in Alberta for 20–30 years; in that account, growth drops sharply after crown closure or around age 40–50. It also gives a typical maximum age of 150–180 years, reports individuals 230–240 years old, and notes one 335-year-old tree. These are species-reference observations, not a growth or lifespan guarantee for a landscape tree. USDA Forest Service Silvics gives the growth and age figures.
Recognize normal needle drop and investigate other defoliation
Tamarack is a deciduous conifer. Needles normally yellow and fall in autumn; this is not evidence by itself that the tree is dying. Needle loss during the growing season, especially if persistent or severe, deserves investigation.
The USDA Forest Service identifies larch sawfly as the most destructive insect enemy of tamarack in its range and larch casebearer as another serious defoliator. Do not treat based only on needle loss: first identify the pest, then consult region-specific extension guidance before making any pesticide decision. The Forest Service species account and USDA NRCS plant guide discuss these pests and stressors.
When tamarack is a poor fit
- The only available spot is heavily shaded or likely to be overtopped.
- The soil is chronically dry and you cannot maintain moisture during establishment.
- The site stays stagnant or deeply flooded for extended periods.
- There is not enough room for a tree that may reach 40–80 feet tall and 35–40 feet wide.
For a regional perspective on tamarack in landscapes, see University of Illinois Extension and UNH Extension. Local extension or nursery guidance is the better source for region-specific planting timing and pest treatment.
