How to choose deep pocket sheets that fit
Measure the mattress and topper together
Measure the mattress from its base to its top. If you use a topper, include its added height in the total. Compare that measurement with the specific sheet’s stated pocket depth or maximum supported mattress height; “deep pocket” is not a standardized fit specification. Sleep Foundation advises: “Always measure the thickness of your mattress before choosing a sheet set.”
Guides use different broad definitions: Sleep Foundation says deep-pocket sheets usually fit mattresses up to 15 inches, with extra-deep models generally accommodating 16–24 inches; Mattress Clarity describes deep pockets as roughly 13–17 inches and treats extra-deep models separately. These ranges overlap, so the individual product specification is more useful than the category name. If a sheet is too tight, it can be difficult to put on or pop off at the corners; if it is too large, it may bunch around the mattress perimeter.
Choose a fabric and weave for the feel you prefer
Percale is generally crisp and cool-feeling, while sateen is smoother, silkier, and more closely draped. Those are broad characteristics, not guarantees about how every sleeper will experience a particular sheet. Consider the set’s material and care instructions as well as its fit. Sleep Foundation also cautions shoppers not to rely on thread count alone and to read material claims carefully.

- Material, weave, and care: Choose between the general feel of percale and sateen, then check the product’s care instructions and material description.

Why sheet rankings differ
These seven category-and-product pairings come from Sleep Foundation’s guide. They are not the only worthwhile choices: Mattress Clarity’s guide, updated October 1, 2026, names Brooklyn Bedding as its overall pick and includes other alternatives. Mattress Clarity says its Certified Sleep Science Coaches have reviewed more than 600 mattresses and accessories over seven years using proprietary analysis and hands-on testing, and that its sheet-set assessments consider cooling, feel, and other factors. That description is the publisher’s account of its own method, not an independent audit.
