For dependable indoor seed starting, follow each seed packet’s directions, sow into premoistened seed-starting mix in a container with drainage, and keep the mix evenly moist and suitably warm. As soon as seedlings emerge, give them strong light; before moving them outdoors, harden them off gradually.

What do you need to start seeds indoors?

  • Seeds suited to your growing season and available space.
  • A clean tray, pot, or cell pack with drainage holes.
  • Lightweight seed-starting mix, rather than heavy garden soil.
  • Labels and a way to provide strong light after emergence.
  • An optional clear cover to slow drying, and an optional heat mat if the growing space is cool or the seeds need warmer soil.

Oregon State University Extension recommends a lightweight mix because heavier soils can hold too much water for indoor starts. Whatever container you use, excess water needs a way to drain.

When should you start seeds indoors?

Check the packet for whether the seed is suitable for indoor starting and how many weeks before transplanting it should be sown. Count back from the expected outdoor planting window in your area, rather than relying on a calendar date from another region. Local frost timing and each crop’s tolerance affect when seedlings can safely go outside.

Packets also provide expected germination times and growing conditions. Treat those estimates as crop-specific guidance: seeds do not all sprout on the same schedule.

Top shelf dishwasher safe.
  • SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.

How do you prepare the mix and container?

  1. Use a clean container with drainage holes. A tray or cell pack helps keep separate seedlings organized; individual pots also work.
  2. Moisten the seed-starting mix before filling the container. Aim for evenly damp mix, not one that is dry in some places and saturated in others.
  3. Fill the container without packing the mix tightly. Leave room at the top for watering and sowing.

How deep should you plant seeds?

Follow the packet’s sowing depth and spacing. If it does not state a depth, University of Minnesota Extension gives a general fallback: plant the seed about twice as deep as its width. This is a rule of thumb, not a replacement for species-specific directions.

Check the packet’s germination-light instructions before covering seeds. Some need light to germinate, while others need darkness. Label each container with the seed name and sowing date so you can match emerging seedlings to their instructions.

How should you manage warmth and moisture while seeds germinate?

Keep the mix evenly moist while you wait, checking it frequently—daily is a useful routine. Do not let it dry out, but avoid waterlogging it. Gentle watering at the surface or watering from below can reduce disturbance to newly sown seeds; check that the mix has become moist rather than assuming the surface tells the whole story.

Soil temperature, not just room air temperature, affects germination. Oregon State University Extension gives 70°F–80°F as broad guidance for soil temperature for most seeds; individual crops may need different conditions, so follow the packet first. A heat mat can help provide bottom warmth, but it is optional rather than necessary for every seed.

How much light do seedlings need after they emerge?

Move emerged seedlings promptly into strong light. University of Minnesota Extension recommends 12–16 hours of light daily and placing lights close to the seedlings. Raise or adjust the fixture as the plants grow so it stays near the canopy without crowding them.

Artificial light is often the more controllable option: a fixture can be kept close and used for a consistent daily period. A sunny window may work in some homes, but its light intensity varies with season, orientation, and conditions, so a windowsill is not reliably sufficient everywhere.

Once seedlings are growing, thin crowded cells by keeping the strongest seedling in each cell. Water according to the mix’s moisture, not a fixed number of times per week; container size, room conditions, and plant size all affect how quickly it dries.

How do you harden seedlings before transplanting?

Gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions over several days instead of moving indoor-grown plants straight outside. Oregon State University Extension’s beginner guidance recommends increasing outdoor time each day for about a week. Use local frost information and the crop’s tolerance to decide when transplanting is safe.

Why have my seeds not emerged—or are my seedlings struggling?

  • No emergence: Check the packet’s expected germination time, sowing depth, light-versus-dark requirement, and temperature guidance. Germination time varies by seed and conditions; do not assume every seed should sprout within a fixed number of days.
  • Mix drying out: Check it frequently and moisten gently. A cover can slow drying before seedlings emerge, but remove it as they appear.
  • Mix staying soggy: Confirm that the container drains, and avoid adding more water while the mix is already saturated. Heavy soil can retain too much moisture indoors.
  • Seedlings growing tall and weak: Move them promptly into stronger light and keep the light close to the canopy, adjusting it as they grow.
