If it is a drain fly, scrub the slimy organic film inside the drain and accessible trap; killing the adults alone will not remove the source. If the flies are slender and gather near houseplants, check the potting soil instead. Persistent flies can point to a hidden damp area or plumbing problem.
Identify the fly before treating the bathroom
“Gnat” is a catchall name for several tiny flies, and the nearest drain is not always the source. Drain flies are fuzzy and moth-like, with broad wings. They often rest on bathroom walls, tubs, or shower stalls and are weak fliers. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that drain flies do not bite. University of Maryland Extension’s drain-fly guide and Virginia Cooperative Extension’s identification guide describe their appearance and habitats.
Fungus gnats are more slender and mosquito-like, with long legs. They are often associated with persistently moist potting mix, though they can also breed in drains containing moist debris. If neither description fits, do not assume the drain is responsible; identify the fly and look for other indoor breeding sources. University of Maryland Extension’s fungus-gnat guide covers their appearance and common sources.
Find which drain or damp area is producing flies
Watch where the adults gather, then test suspected drains one at a time. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes covering a drain with clear tape while leaving space for airflow, or using an inverted clear cup, so emerging flies can be detected. Check the following day or over the interval recommended by the guidance you follow. Test likely bathroom drains and suspect overflow routes; inspect nearby houseplants if the flies look like fungus gnats. University of Maryland Extension also describes covering a plant or drain with screen or cheesecloth for several days to help locate the source.

- Look for flies resting near a sink, tub, shower, or overflow opening.
- Check drains individually rather than treating every drain at once.
- Inspect plant soil and nearby damp areas if the flies are slender or gather around plants or windows.
Remove drain-fly breeding film with physical cleaning
Drain-fly larvae develop in the gelatinous organic film that coats wet drains and traps. The key job is to remove that material from the surfaces where it collects, not merely flush or spray the drain.
- Clear the opening. Remove the stopper or shower cover if it can be taken off safely. Clean away hair and visible residue.
- Brush reachable surfaces. Use a stiff drain or flexible pipe brush to scrub the inside of the drain opening and accessible pipe surfaces where slime can cling. Scrub the stopper and drain parts as well.
- Clean accessible traps or parts if needed. Only take apart components you can safely access and reassemble correctly. If the source appears deeper in the plumbing or you cannot reach it, arrange a plumbing inspection rather than guessing.
- Repeat inspection. Recheck the suspected source after cleaning. If flies continue to emerge, reassess other drains, overflow routes, plants, and damp areas.
A plumber’s snake can help with hair-related shower clogs, but it is not a substitute for scrubbing biofilm from accessible surfaces. What treatments can and cannot do
Hot water may offer short-term control, and a foaming or enzymatic product labeled for organic drain buildup may help reach pipe surfaces. These are adjuncts to removing buildup: thick deposits can require brushing, and product effectiveness varies. Check the current label and compatibility with your plumbing before use.

Virginia Cooperative Extension does not recommend bleach or vinegar as drain-fly controls: they are not effective enough, and bleach may damage pipes if improperly diluted. Do not pour insecticides down drains. Never mix bleach and ammonia, which can release toxic gases. Follow the label for any product you use.

Prevent the flies from returning
- Keep drain openings, stoppers, shower covers, and accessible parts free of hair and organic residue.
- Fix plumbing leaks and address damp cracks or wet areas instead of masking them with a surface spray.
- Run water periodically in seldom-used drains so their traps do not dry out.
- If fungus gnats are coming from a houseplant, let the soil dry between waterings and adjust the watering schedule.
When to call a plumber
Seek plumbing help if flies persist after thorough cleaning and the source is inaccessible, or if you find a damp wall, leaking pipe, dry trap, suspected broken toilet seal, or another sign of a plumbing defect. Drain flies can breed in places beyond the visible drain, including overflow channels and hidden wet organic buildup; repeated cleaning of the wrong opening will not solve an inaccessible source.
