Cempasúchil—the Mexican flower commonly called a marigold in English—is a defining part of many Día de los Muertos offerings. Its yellow-orange color is associated with the sun, while its petals and scent are traditionally understood to help guide loved ones’ spirits toward an altar. These meanings make the flower more than decoration, though customs vary among regions and families.

Why are marigolds used for Día de los Muertos?

In Mexican cultural accounts, cempasúchil connects remembrance with the sun and with the return of loved ones’ spirits. Families place the flowers on offerings and altars; in some traditions, they scatter petals to form a path from the entrance of a home to the altar. The path is meant to help the spirits find the offering.

This is a traditional belief, not a claim that flowers literally direct spirits. The flowers’ color, fragrance, and placement work together within a practice of welcoming and remembering the dead.

What does cempasúchil represent on an altar?

Its color evokes the sun

Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture explains that the flower’s yellow color evokes the sun. The same account connects that symbolism with a tradition in which the sun guides the souls of the dead. Cempasúchil therefore brings a vivid, life-giving image to an altar devoted to remembrance.

Its petals can mark a route to the offering

Petals may be arranged from a doorway toward the altar. Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture describes this as a way for loved ones’ spirits to find the altar. Some families also associate the flower’s aroma with guiding the spirits.

It is one part of a larger offering

An altar is not simply a floral display: it is part of a family’s act of remembrance. Cempasúchil may sit alongside food, candles, photographs, and other elements, with the arrangement reflecting local and family customs. The flower’s role is meaningful within that broader offering.

What is cempasúchil?

A 2011 article from Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture identifies the familiar flor de muertos as Tagetes erecta. The name cempasúchil derives from the Nahuatl word cempohualxochitl; the article renders it as “twenty flowers” or “of the four hundred petals.” In English, the flower is commonly called Mexican marigold.

The name and symbolism are culturally specific. “Marigold” is a broad English common name, while cempasúchil refers to the flower especially associated with Día de Muertos in Mexico.

Is cempasúchil used everywhere in the same way?

No. Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture describes regional differences in the dates, schedules, prayers, altar contents, and styles of remembrance. Cempasúchil is widely recognized and defining in many celebrations, but it is not a rule every household follows.

Other flowers may also appear. The Secretariat of Culture notes chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, and sunflowers in some places. A family’s choices can reflect what is customary locally, what is meaningful to them, and what is available.

How did the flower become part of Día de los Muertos?

Official Mexican cultural descriptions characterize Día de Muertos as a celebration with pre-Hispanic roots that blended over time with Catholic beliefs and observances. That history should not be mistaken for a single, unchanged ritual practiced identically across Mexico. The celebration’s forms differ, and the meaning of cempasúchil belongs to a living tradition shaped by communities and families.

How widespread is cempasúchil production in Mexico?

Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development, citing SIAP, reported that Mexico produced 19,442 tonnes of cempasúchil flowers in 2021 and identified Puebla and Hidalgo among the leading producers. That is a production figure for 2021, not a current estimate. The same Secretariat has reported that Universidad Autónoma Chapingo listed 30 registered cempasúchil varieties; the year for that count was not specified, so it should not be read as a confirmed current total.
