How to choose a botanical garden to visit
“Most beautiful” depends on what you want to see. A formal fountain display, a quiet Japanese garden, a desert landscape, and a tropical conservatory are very different experiences. The gardens below are presented in no ranked order; compare their climates, signature landscapes, collections, and settings to find a good fit.
- For glasshouses and designed displays: Longwood Gardens, Phipps Conservatory, and the New York Botanical Garden.
- For Japanese garden design: Portland Japanese Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Chicago Botanic Garden.
- For distinctive climates: Desert Botanical Garden for arid plants; Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Naples Botanical Garden for tropical landscapes; Denver Botanic Gardens for high-altitude and alpine planting.
- For a mix of gardens and other attractions: The Huntington combines botanical, library, and art experiences.

1. New York Botanical Garden — Bronx, New York
A landmark glasshouse, a rose collection, and a native plant garden give the New York Botanical Garden a range of settings within the city. Its preserved forest offers a different experience from the cultivated displays, making this a good choice for visitors who want both designed gardens and a more natural landscape.
2. Longwood Gardens — Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

3. Missouri Botanical Garden — St. Louis, Missouri
The Climatron, a glass-domed tropical conservatory, is the garden’s defining architectural feature. A Japanese garden adds a contrasting landscape style, while the broader collection makes this a rewarding stop for visitors interested in both plants and garden design.
4. Atlanta Botanical Garden — Atlanta, Georgia
An orchid center, a canopy walk, tropical displays, and seasonal living-sculpture exhibitions give this garden a distinctly varied feel. It suits visitors who want more than flower beds: the experience moves between elevated paths, conservatory spaces, and large-scale horticultural displays.
5. The Huntington — San Marino, California
The Huntington brings together botanical gardens, a library, and art. Its grounds range from desert and California gardens to Chinese, Japanese, and rose gardens, offering several distinct landscapes in one visit.
6. Brooklyn Botanic Garden — Brooklyn, New York
Cherry blossoms, a Japanese-inspired landscape, rose collections, and bonsai make Brooklyn Botanic Garden an especially appealing urban destination. Its design and seasonal character offer a concentrated garden experience within New York City.
7. Desert Botanical Garden — Phoenix, Arizona
Set against the Papago Buttes, this garden focuses on desert plants and the forms they take in an arid landscape. Trails through collections of cacti and other desert vegetation make it a compelling alternative to gardens centered on temperate flowers. Bloom timing varies, so treat any seasonal color as a possibility rather than a guarantee.
8. Chicago Botanic Garden — Glencoe, Illinois
Islands and lakes shape the setting, while a Japanese garden, formal garden rooms, and natural areas provide variety across the grounds. It is a good choice for visitors who want to move between carefully composed spaces and broader landscapes.

9. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden — Coral Gables, Florida
Palms, rainforest displays, fruit collections, and butterflies make Fairchild a vivid warm-climate counterpart to desert and alpine gardens. Its tropical focus gives visitors a chance to explore plant life and landscapes that differ from those in much of the country.
10. United States Botanic Garden — Washington, D.C.
Close to the Capitol, the United States Botanic Garden combines its Conservatory’s tropical, arid, orchid, and other plant displays with outdoor gardens. It is an accessible way to add a living collection to a visit to the nation’s capital.

Victorian glasshouse architecture is Phipps’s signature, complemented by changing indoor displays. It is an especially appealing choice when you want a garden visit centered on conservatory rooms and plants protected from outdoor weather.

The best time depends on the garden and the experience you want. Spring can bring blossoms at some destinations; fall can highlight foliage; Florida and desert gardens may be more comfortable in cooler months; and some gardens offer winter light displays. Bloom timing and event schedules vary with weather and horticultural calendars, so use seasonal suggestions as planning leads, not promises.
Before travelling, check the individual garden’s official calendar and visitor page for current hours, admission or timed-entry requirements, accessibility, closures, parking and transit, photography rules, and event dates. Do not assume one garden’s arrangements apply to another.
What to bring and what to check
- Wear comfortable walking shoes: garden visits may involve long stretches on paths.
- For outdoor areas, consider water, sunscreen, and a hat.
- Check for closures, access details, and photography restrictions before setting out, especially if you are planning a photo session or visiting for a scheduled display.
A current example: visiting the United States Botanic Garden
