The right reusable straw depends on what you drink and where you use it: thick smoothies and boba call for a wider opening, while an everyday cup may be better served by a slim, portable straw that is easy to clean. Good Housekeeping and Reviewed have published testing on reusable straws, but the testing behind the picks below is theirs—not new testing for this guide. Good Housekeeping’s page was updated February 24, 2022, and Reviewed’s roundup was updated April 3, 2023, so check current product details and availability before buying.
How to choose a reusable straw
Start with the drink and the cup, then weigh comfort, portability, and cleaning. A straw that works well for a smoothie may be awkward in a narrow water-bottle opening.
- Drink thickness and diameter: Smoothies and boba need a wider, firm straw. Check that its diameter fits the opening in your cup lid.
- Mouthfeel: Stainless steel is rigid; some testers found metal uncomfortable against their teeth or noticed a metallic aftertaste. Silicone is softer, while glass lets you see inside the straw but is more delicate.
- Cup fit: A wide straw can be unsuitable for some tumblers and bottles. Flexible silicone may also be difficult to insert into a narrow container.
- Portability: A case or collapsible design helps when carrying a straw away from home. A brush is useful for cleaning it on the go.
- Cleaning: Look for dishwasher guidance or an appropriately sized cleaning brush. Follow the product maker’s care instructions.

What the published testing tells you—and what it does not
Good Housekeeping says its Institute tested more than 35 models and analyzed over 900 data points. Its published page was updated February 24, 2022. Reviewed says its 2023 testing used a smoothie, a large iced coffee, and two cups of water per day with a straw, assessing taste, drinkability, cleaning, portability, sturdiness, and accessories. These methods and rankings belong to those publishers; product rankings, listings, and stock can change.

How to clean a reusable straw
- Check the product’s care instructions first. Use a dishwasher only when the maker says the straw or set is dishwasher-safe.
- If hand-washing, Good Housekeeping recommends dish soap and warm water. Scrub the inside and outside, using a straw cleaner if one is not included.
- Rinse thoroughly and let the straw dry according to its care directions before storing it in a case.
Vitamix describes its own eight-piece set as six food-grade 18/8 stainless steel straws with food-grade silicone comfort sleeves and two nylon-bristle cleaning brushes. The manufacturer says the set is BPA-free and dishwasher-safe; those specifications apply to that product, not reusable straws generally. HALM says its glass straws are dishwasher-safe, include a cleaning brush, and are lead- and BPA-free; it also gives a temperature range of -40 to +200 degrees. Those are HALM’s claims for its own products, not independent validation or a guarantee for all glass straws.
