Sometimes you can remove an old stain, even after it has dried or gone through the dryer—but success depends on the stain and fabric. Check the care label, test any treatment on a hidden area, and match the method to the stain. After washing, inspect the garment while it is still wet; if the stain remains, treat it again before applying heat. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) cautions that some set-in stains cannot be removed.
Before treating an old stain
Check the care label
Confirm that the garment is washable and follow its care instructions. If the label calls for dry cleaning, do not use a home pretreatment that conflicts with those directions.
Identify the stain and test the treatment
When you know what caused the stain, you can choose a more suitable treatment and avoid making it harder to remove. If you are unsure what it is, ACI recommends rinsing or soaking the area in cold water before treating or laundering. Test your chosen product on a hidden seam or other inconspicuous spot and check for color change before applying it to the stain.
How to treat and wash the garment
- Pretreat or soak: For a general old-stain approach, ACI advises using a product containing enzymes, then laundering. Follow the product label and the garment’s care instructions.
- Use stain-specific directions: Water temperature and treatment vary by stain. Use the temperature and products recommended for that stain, while staying within the garment’s care limits. Do not apply one universal recipe to every mark.
- Launder and inspect while wet: Use bleach only if it is safe for the fabric. Before putting the garment in the dryer or ironing it, check whether the stain is gone.
- Repeat before applying heat: If the mark remains, repeat a compatible treatment and wash again. Some old stains may need more than one application.
Heat from a dryer can set a stain, but a dried or dryer-exposed mark is not automatically beyond treatment. Avoid further heat until you have checked the result.

Choose a method for the stain
ACI’s stain-by-stain guidance shows why it is important to identify the mark. These examples are not guarantees; check the garment label and product directions before proceeding.
| Stain | ACI’s guidance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Dried blood | Pretreat or soak in warm water with an enzyme-containing product, then launder. If the stain remains, rewash with bleach that is safe for the fabric. | ACI’s fresh-blood directions call for cold water; its dried-blood directions differ. |
| Aged baby formula, dairy, or egg | Pretreat or soak with an enzyme-containing product. For aged stains, ACI advises soaking at least 30 minutes or several hours. | Use a treatment compatible with the garment’s care instructions. |
| Fruit | Use enzyme pretreatment or soaking; ACI advises a longer soak for aged stains. | Follow the care label and product directions. |
| Coffee or tea | Sponge or soak in cool water, then pretreat with a prewash stain remover, liquid laundry detergent, liquid booster, or detergent paste and launder. Bleach is an option only if fabric-safe. | ACI notes that enzyme pretreatment or soaking may help with older stains. |
| Light grease or oil | Pretreat with a prewash stain remover, liquid detergent, or liquid booster, then launder at the hottest temperature safe for the fabric. | ACI gives a different method for heavy grease stains; follow the relevant product label and garment directions. |
| Rust-colored discoloration | Use a rust remover recommended for the fabric. | Do not use sodium hypochlorite bleach; it can intensify the discoloration. |
| Tomato sauce | ACI says dried tomato stains will often be permanent, though its guide also describes detergent treatment and soaking for a stubborn remaining stain. | Results are uncertain; repeated treatment is not a promise of removal. |
When to stop
Repeated safe treatments may not remove a set-in stain. ACI warns that some are impossible to remove; if compatible treatments fail, the stain or fabric may be permanently damaged. Do not escalate to a harsher product or hotter water unless both the garment’s care directions and the treatment instructions allow it.
