The pink film in a shower is often associated with Serratia marcescens, a bacterium—not a mold. Color alone cannot confirm what is growing. On washable hard surfaces, scrub the film away with detergent and water, remove the loosened residue, and dry the area. Better ventilation and routine cleaning can help limit its return.
What is the pink stuff in your shower?
Pink or salmon-colored film on shower surfaces is commonly associated with Serratia marcescens, a bacterium. University Extension and Portland Water District describe it as a frequent cause of pink bathroom residue and shower slime. The name “pink mold” is common, but it does not establish that the growth is mold.
Appearance is not a laboratory identification: not every pink mark has the same cause, and you cannot confirm the organism by looking at it. If the growth is extensive, embedded in building materials, or appears with a leak or other water damage, investigate the moisture source and consider an appropriate professional assessment.
Is pink shower film dangerous?
The sources cited here do not quantify the health risk of ordinary pink shower film or establish a specific level of risk for people using a shower where it appears. General mold guidance is relevant to cleanup precautions, but it should not be treated as proof that routine pink film presents a particular hazard.

People with allergies, immune suppression, or underlying lung disease should not take part in mold cleanup, according to CDC guidance. For extensive cleanup involving suspected mold, follow CDC precautions and consider qualified help. For routine surface cleaning, avoid breathing spray or dust and follow cleaner-label directions.
How to remove pink film from washable surfaces
- Check the surface and cleaner. Use a detergent or cleaner compatible with the shower’s finish, and follow its label. If needed, wet the area as appropriate for that surface.
- Scrub the visible film. Use a small bathroom scrub brush or cloth with detergent and water to loosen the growth.
- Remove the residue. Wipe or rinse away the loosened material rather than leaving it on the surface.
- Dry the area. Drying helps reduce lingering moisture that can support renewed growth.
EPA recommends detergent and water for hard surfaces and says to dry them completely. CDC says cleaning with soap and water removes most germs from surfaces in most situations. Physical removal matters: EPA notes that dead mold can still trigger allergic reactions in some people, so killing growth alone is not enough.

Do you need bleach or a special product?
Bleach is not required as a routine approach to mold cleanup. EPA does not recommend biocides as routine practice for mold cleanup, and a disinfectant does not replace removing visible residue. Product strengths and surface compatibility vary, so there is no universal bleach recipe suitable for every shower.
If you choose bleach or another disinfectant, ventilate the room and follow the product label. Never mix cleaning products: CDC specifically warns against mixing bleach with ammonia or another cleanser. Do not assume vinegar, bleach, or a product marketed as a “pink mold killer” will permanently prevent the film from returning.

How to make pink shower film less likely to return
- Improve ventilation. Use an exhaust fan that vents outdoors. CDC recommends bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors; if moisture lingers, address the bathroom’s ventilation.
- Run the fan around showering. University Extension suggests running the bathroom fan before, during, and about 20 minutes after a shower. Treat that as extension advice, not a universal engineering standard.
- Clean routinely. EPA advises increasing ventilation and cleaning more frequently when bathroom mold reappears; those steps will usually prevent recurrence or keep it to a minimum.
- Dry wet surfaces where practical. Removing standing water and letting the area dry reduces lingering moisture.
If growth keeps returning despite cleaning and improved ventilation, look for a continuing moisture problem. Leaks, damaged materials, hidden dampness, or extensive growth may call for a professional assessment rather than stronger surface chemicals.
