Plant rhizoma perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata) as live rhizomes, plugs, or potted plants—not as ordinary edible peanut seed. In a sunny, well-drained site, prepare weed-free ground, space starts about 12–18 inches apart, and keep them watered while they establish. It can become a flowering, low-maintenance groundcover in warm regions, but it is not suited to repeated foot traffic.
Choose the right perennial peanut
Rhizoma perennial peanut is Arachis glabrata, a different species from edible peanut, Arachis hypogaea. Landscape and forage material generally produces few or essentially no seeds, so it is established vegetatively. Ordinary peanut seed will not grow into the intended perennial groundcover. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions lists rhizomes, plugs, and container-grown plants; a local nursery may need to order ornamental stock. A March 2026 UF/IFAS Charlotte County article also describes potted plants and sod pieces. Check that the label names Arachis glabrata and ask whether the variety suits your region.

Sun, drainage, and climate
Choose full sun for the best flowering; partial shade can work. Drainage matters: the UF/IFAS forage guide says plants do not tolerate saturated conditions for more than one to two weeks. Regional performance is not uniform. UF/IFAS sources focus on Florida and warm subtropical settings; in colder parts of Florida the plant may lose leaves, while it can remain evergreen in frost-free parts of the state. The older UF/IFAS Perennial Peanut Establishment Guide discusses warm-region adaptation and drainage, but is an archival guide whose notice directs readers to check current local recommendations.
Traffic and spread
Use it as a low-traffic groundcover, not as a durable walking surface. If people will cross the planting, install stepping stones or a separate path. Its rhizomes can spread beyond the intended area; edging helps keep it out of adjoining beds or lawn. UF/IFAS recommends metal or fiberglass edging along landscape beds to contain vigorous rhizomes.

How to plant perennial peanut
- Clear the planting area. Remove turf, weeds, and especially persistent grasses before planting. Young plants compete poorly with established vegetation.
- Check the soil and drainage. For a larger planting, take a soil sample and follow recommendations based on its results. Do not apply historical fertilizer rates from an archival field guide as universal home-garden advice. Choose another site if water remains saturated for extended periods.
- Set out live planting material. For landscape use, space plugs or individual starts about 12–18 inches apart. If using field-scale rhizomes, UF/IFAS gives an average planting depth of about one inch and recommends firming the bed afterward.
- Water as the plants take hold. Irrigate regularly during establishment, particularly in dry weather. Established plants are drought resistant, but new starts still need moisture to root and spread.
- Keep competing growth down. Remove weeds carefully without damaging the new planting. In forage establishment, UF/IFAS describes mowing or grazing to reduce taller competing growth; homeowners should use small-scale methods appropriate to their site.
Planting dates and the time needed to fill in depend on moisture, rainfall, stock, and planting scale. The late-winter and late-summer dates in UF/IFAS field guidance are Florida agronomic advice, not a universal garden calendar.
Care after establishment
Once established, perennial peanut is drought resistant and UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions says it needs little fertilizer. Mowing is optional: it can tidy the planting and encourage more blooms. In its local Charlotte County guidance, UF/IFAS suggests mowing at about four inches monthly for neatness and weed control; treat that as a regional practice rather than a required schedule. Install edging where the spreading rhizomes need to be contained.

Can perennial peanut replace a lawn?
It can serve as a flowering alternative to turf in a suitable warm-region site, but it does not perform like a lawn intended for routine walking or play. Plan for paths, stepping stones, or another walking surface, and expect vegetative installation rather than sowing seed. Compared with turf, the practical trade-offs are site fit, establishment effort, traffic tolerance, mowing, edging, and seasonal appearance—not a guaranteed cost saving.

UF/IFAS identifies Florigraze and Arbrook as widely planted forage cultivars. Florigraze is described as more widely adapted and more tolerant of grazing. Arbrook is more erect, can produce more dry matter on well-drained peninsular Florida sands, and is less tolerant of grazing and cold. These forage traits do not establish a direct ranking for home landscape use. The Charlotte County article notes low-growing, free-flowering ‘Ecoturf’ in landscape plantings.
