The three practical options are a protective cold frame or greenhouse, dormant storage in a frost-free garage or basement, or a cool, bright room. None guarantees that the plant will return: mum type, cultivar, local conditions and winter severity all matter.
Choose a wintering method for the space you have
A mum left in its nursery or decorative pot has less protection from cold than one planted in the ground. Choose a location that will keep the root ball from freezing, and match its light and watering conditions to the method.
| Method | Light and growth | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Cold frame or greenhouse | Protected structure; the guidance does not specify a light level | Confirm the structure provides meaningful protection from freezing |
| Garage or basement | Dormant storage; light is not required in the stated instructions | Keep the mix barely moist, not saturated or completely dry |
| Cool room | Bright window, about 40–45°F | Maintain cool conditions and monitor the pot |
These options come from Virginia Cooperative Extension and University of Missouri Extension. The right choice depends on the actual temperatures and conditions in your space.
1. Move the pot to a cold frame or greenhouse
Virginia Cooperative Extension lists a cold frame or greenhouse as a way to protect a mum in its original container. The structure needs to provide meaningful protection from freezing; simply placing a pot in an unheated or poorly sealed structure is not a guarantee in every climate.

2. Store the dormant pot in a frost-free garage or basement
As the plant becomes dormant, reduce watering. Once dormant, Missouri Extension advises cutting the top back to several inches above the growing medium and placing the pot in a basement corner or well-insulated garage where it will not freeze.
Check the growing medium periodically. If it feels dry to the touch, give it a light watering; keep it barely moist rather than waterlogged, and do not let it dry out completely. While the plant is still active, maintain moisture. Virginia Extension advises watering through the first hard frost, then gradually reducing water as winter approaches.

3. Keep it in a cool, bright room
Missouri Extension gives a separate option: keep the pot by a bright window in a cool room at about 40–45°F. This is not the dark, dormant-storage approach used for a garage or basement. Use the cool-room method when you can provide both bright light and consistently cool conditions.
Should you plant the mum in the garden instead?
Planting in a garden bed is another possibility, but a late-fall move can leave too little time for roots to establish before the ground freezes. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that later planting reduces survival; Missouri Extension likewise cautions that a mum kept in a decorative pot until after flowering may not have enough time to develop the root system needed for winter.

For garden-planted mums, Virginia Extension recommends leaving stems and foliage until after the first hard frost, then covering the crown with 3–4 inches of loose, airy mulch. Missouri Extension gives different pruning advice for established garden plants: cut them back after the leaves turn brown, then mulch. Follow guidance suited to your planting situation and local conditions rather than treating either pruning schedule as universal.
Check what kind of mum you have
“Hardy mum” on a label is not a promise of winter survival. Garden mums and florist mums may both be sold as Chrysanthemum × morifolium, but florist mums are not bred for hardiness and are not hardy when subjected to freezing. Garden mum hardiness varies by cultivar, location, growing conditions, site and winter severity. Check the plant tag if it is available.

Move a stored mum into spring care
For a pot stored over winter, Missouri Extension recommends planting it in the garden once the soil begins to warm. Choose a sunny location with about six or more hours of direct sun and water carefully while the plant establishes a strong root system. If you mulched a garden-planted mum, Virginia Extension advises pulling the mulch away by early to mid-April after the danger of severe cold has passed; use local weather, not the date alone, to decide when.
