Grow coral honeysuckle (*Lonicera sempervirens*) in a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil. Give it a sturdy trellis, arbor, or fence if you want it to climb; without one, it can sprawl as ground cover. Water regularly while it establishes, then prune selectively after flowering. Its tubular blooms attract hummingbirds, but its berries should not be eaten.
Identify the right honeysuckle
Coral honeysuckle, also called trumpet honeysuckle, is the twining woody vine Lonicera sempervirens, native to central and eastern parts of the United States. Kew describes its U.S. range as extending from Maine south to Florida and west to Texas. The plant bears red to orange-red tubular flowers, often yellow inside, followed by fleshy red berries. Leaves may persist through mild winters but can drop in colder conditions. Kew’s plant profile
Check the botanical name on the plant label: “honeysuckle” alone is not specific enough. Coral honeysuckle is distinct from Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), which UF/IFAS describes as invasive; it identifies coral honeysuckle as a Florida-Friendly alternative. UF/IFAS: Coral Honeysuckle
Choose a site and support
Sun and soil
Choose full sun for the best flowering. Coral honeysuckle tolerates partial shade, but flowering is poorer there, according to UF/IFAS and North Carolina State Extension. Aim for moist, well-drained soil: the vine tolerates varied soil types, while dry sandy conditions are a limitation. North Carolina Extension describes humus-rich, neutral-to-acidic soil as favorable. Avoid a site where water remains around the roots. North Carolina State Extension: Lonicera sempervirens

Room to climb—or spread
North Carolina Extension gives a typical mature height of 10 to 20 feet. Its twining stems need a structure to climb, such as a sturdy trellis, arbor, or fence. Set the support before planting, leave room for the mature vine, and guide young stems toward it. You can also let the plant grow along the ground as a spreading ground cover. North Carolina State Extension: Lonicera sempervirens UF/IFAS: Coral Honeysuckle
Plant and water it through establishment
- Prepare the site. Select a sunny position with well-drained soil and install any trellis or other support before planting.
- Set the root ball. General vine-planting guidance from University of Maryland Extension recommends placing the root ball level with or slightly above soil grade.
- Water thoroughly. Soak the root area after planting. During the first growing season, check soil moisture at least weekly; water deeply when the root area feels dry. Continue monitoring establishment through the first two years.
- Adjust to conditions. Treat that schedule as regional guidance, not a fixed rule. Soil texture, rainfall, temperature, and exposure affect how often watering is needed. University of Maryland Extension: Vines in the Landscape
Once established, coral honeysuckle is described by UF/IFAS as generally low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. That does not mean a newly planted vine can go without water: keep checking the root zone as it establishes, and avoid both prolonged dryness and waterlogged soil. UF/IFAS: Coral Honeysuckle

Fertilize sparingly and prune after flowering
Fertilizer
Do not apply high-nitrogen fertilizer in an attempt to force growth. North Carolina Extension cautions that excess nitrogen encourages foliage at the expense of flowers. The cited sources do not establish a need for routine fertilizer when the vine is growing in suitable soil. North Carolina State Extension: Lonicera sempervirens
Pruning and training
North Carolina Extension says coral honeysuckle flowers on new growth and recommends waiting until after flowering to prune. Use selective cuts to guide stems onto their support or keep the vine within its space. Reported flowering patterns are not uniform: Maryland Extension’s regional table describes it as blooming on both old and new wood. Because of that variation, avoid hard pruning if preserving as much flowering as possible is important. Choose a cultivar and check regional suitability
UF/IFAS lists three cultivars with different ornamental features. Compare them by flower color, bloom timing, available space, and the support you can provide. Ask a locally appropriate native-plant nursery whether a cultivar suits your area; UF/IFAS notes that native-plant and some conventional nurseries may carry coral honeysuckle, but availability varies.
| Cultivar | Feature reported by UF/IFAS | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| ‘Sulphurea’ | Bright yellow flowers | Choose if yellow flowers are the priority; confirm local suitability and availability with the seller. |
| ‘Magnifica’ | Large red blooms and later flowering | Consider if you want larger red flowers or later bloom timing; allow for the vine’s support and space needs. |
| ‘Superba’ | Broadly oval leaves | Consider its foliage form alongside local suitability and mature growth needs. |
UF/IFAS lists USDA hardiness zones 4 through 10A. Treat that as the range given by that source, not a guarantee for every site or a substitute for local recommendations.
