The 25 ideas below range from bright flower mixes to leafy arrangements; adapt plant counts to your container and the plants’ mature size.
“Shade” is not identical at every site. The University of Massachusetts Amherst uses less than six hours of sun as its category for shade recipes, but results also depend on whether the light is direct or dappled, local climate, and cultivar. These are practical combinations, not guaranteed or trial-tested plantings.
How to choose a shade-container recipe
Start with the light your container actually receives, then decide whether you want flowers, colorful leaves, or both. Impatiens, New Guinea impatiens, wax and tuberous begonias, coleus, Browallia, wishbone flower (Torenia), polka dot plant, and caladium are among the shade-suitable choices described by Iowa State University Extension.
- Match growing needs: Put plants with similar light, water, and nutrient requirements together, as NC State Extension advises.
- Plan the shape: Put taller plants toward the middle or back, medium plants between them and the edge, and cascading plants near the rim.
- Allow for mature size: A new planting may look sparse at first; crowding plants to fill the pot immediately can leave too little room as they grow.
- Choose your color source: Coleus, caladium, and polka dot plant contribute patterned or vivid leaves, so a container can stay colorful even when flowers are not the main feature.
Flower-forward combinations
1. Pink and purple glow
Palette: Pink, deep purple, and light blue. For a medium container 15–24 inches in diameter, use three pink wax begonias, two dark-purple bloodleaf (Iresine), and four light-blue lobelias. This is a University of Massachusetts Amherst recipe; adjust for mature plant size and the actual pot.

3. Pink, deep pink, and white window box
Palette: Pink flowers, deep-pink foliage, and white. For a 24-inch window box, the UMass recipe calls for two pink Rieger begonias, two dark Rex begonias with deep-pink tones, and three white Browallia. Adapt spacing to the box and mature plants.

Pair yellow wishbone flower with purple or violet impatiens. Choose a pot with enough space for both to spread instead of packing extra plants into the center.

Planting the container
Choose the pot and growing medium
UMass Amherst’s reference sizes are a medium pot 15–24 inches in diameter, a large pot more than 24 inches in diameter, and a 24-inch-long window box. Those dimensions apply to the three specific UMass recipes above, not to every possible combination. Size any other container for the plants’ mature dimensions and available volume.
Use a soilless potting mix made for containers rather than garden soil. UMass Amherst’s instruction is: “Choose a soilless mix designed for container growing for best results. Avoid using garden soil.” Lightly moisten the mix before planting. The guidance gives 3–8 inches apart as a starting spacing range for transplants; adjust it to plant size and container dimensions.
Make drainage work
Use a container with drainage openings and keep them from becoming blocked; UMass suggests shielding the opening. Do not rely on a layer of rocks at the bottom to correct excess water. Elevate the pot so water can drain freely and the base is less likely to leave surface stains or mold.
Water and feed according to conditions
Check containers daily, especially while plants establish, but water when the mix needs it rather than following a universal calendar. The amount and frequency depend on weather, container size, and material. Apply a water-soluble or slow-release fertilizer according to its label.
Plan for tender plants and cold weather
Caladium and tuberous begonia are tender in many climates. Grow them as seasonal plants or store their tubers indoors where appropriate; do not assume they will survive winter outdoors everywhere. Empty pottery before a hard frost to reduce the risk of cracking.
Quick Recap
Which combination should you choose?
- For the site: Base the choice on actual direct or dappled light, not just the word “shade” on a recipe.
- For the look: Choose flower-forward combinations for prominent blooms, foliage-led ones for leaf color, or a texture recipe for contrast in plant shape.
- For the container: Compare mature height and spread with the pot’s dimensions, and give plants enough room.
- For upkeep: Group plants with similar water needs and consider how often you can check the pot, especially in changing weather.
- For the season: Decide whether you are comfortable replacing tender plants annually or storing tubers indoors.
