As the rivet cooled, it contracted and clamped the joined members together. Riveted structures are not simply relics, though. Their original joints and materials can preserve evidence of construction, while maintaining a working structure may call for repairs, reinforcement, or replacement.
How a hot-riveted joint worked
A rivet is a metal pin with a head at one end. In hot riveting, workers heated the rivet, inserted it through aligned holes in the members, and shaped the exposed end into a second head. As the metal cooled, it contracted, tightening its grip on the joint.
Engineering historian Thomas Leslie explains that hot rivet metal could fill imperfect holes and compress within the joint as it cooled, contributing to a stiff, reliable connection when the design and workmanship were sound. That is a description of how a properly made joint could work—not evidence that rivets are inherently better than bolts, welding, or other systems in every application.

Bridges on a landmark scale
The Forth Bridge illustrates the scale of riveted construction. According to The Forth Bridges’ official construction statistics, its superstructure weighs more than 50,000 tonnes and contains about 6.5 million rivets. The bridge is 2.5 kilometres long and carries a double railway track 46 metres above the Forth at high tide.

At Tower Bridge, a Science Museum Group collection record documents an engineering plan dated 23 January 1889 for girder jointing and riveting on site. Riveted frames also helped shape steel skyscrapers, as Leslie describes in his account of the development of riveted construction. Together, these examples show that the technique belonged to both industrial architecture and major infrastructure.
The speed of machine-powered work
Leslie records that machine-powered riveting gangs could drive a single rivet in less than four seconds in the historical context he describes. That figure illustrates the pace of mechanised construction in that account; it is not a modern production benchmark.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Is riveting really a lost art?
Not literally. In a National Park Service interview, historic bridge restorer Vern Mesler rejects the familiar “lost art” label: “Well, it’s not a lost art.” Mesler says rivets in sizes available a century earlier could still be bought and describes riveting equipment used in a preservation workshop. This is a practitioner’s account, not a comprehensive survey of current suppliers or a guarantee that a particular size or tool is available for every project.
That distinction matters: a craft can remain practicable without being the right method for every repair. The National Park Service interview also makes a case for involving craftspeople alongside engineers and preservationists, so that construction knowledge and the value of original material inform restoration decisions.

How historic rivets and structures are maintained
Repair the structure, not an abstract idea of originality
Preservation is a series of choices, not a rule to freeze every component in place. The Golden Gate Bridge authority’s maintenance account describes retrofits, replacement of some original riveted X-braced struts with higher-strength steel, and replacement of rusted rivets with bolts. It also identifies a “helldog” power chisel used to remove rusted rivets. These are examples of work on that bridge; they do not establish a suitable repair for another structure.

- What is the member’s condition and structural role?
- What original material and evidence of construction would be retained or lost?
- Will the proposed repair be compatible with the existing structure?
- What safety and future maintenance needs must it meet?
- What project-specific cost, access, or construction constraints apply?
The available accounts do not provide comparable project costs or sufficient engineering data to rank hot riveting, bolting, welding, and component replacement as universal options. A project’s structural safety and repair method require qualified engineering assessment and relevant local preservation guidance.
Protective coatings are part of long-term care
The Forth Bridges’ restoration history reports that full repainting of the Forth Bridge was completed in December 2011. The work included preparation and protective coating applied by hand to each of the roughly 6.5 million rivets. The same source stated an expected coating-system lifetime of 20–25 years; that was an expectation, not a statement of the coating’s present condition.

What riveted structures can still teach us
Original fabric can reveal how a structure was assembled: the joint layout, workmanship, and choices made by its builders. But keeping every original part is not automatically the safest or most practical outcome. The Golden Gate Bridge’s documented replacements show that heritage preservation and structural intervention can coexist. The work is to understand what the original material tells us, assess the member’s present role and condition, and choose a repair that meets the structure’s needs without needless loss of historic evidence.
