Because “mahogany” is also applied to other species and woods, the botanical name is the clearest way to identify the material.
What is Honduras mahogany?
ITIS accepts Swietenia macrophylla King as the species’ scientific name and records “Honduras mahogany” as an English common name. The species is native to Central and South America, according to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The common name does not establish that a particular board or finished item is this species. “Mahogany” may refer to other Swietenia species or to woods from unrelated genera. Kew’s CITES timber guide lists multiple tree species marketed under mahogany names, including woods that are not CITES-listed. Check the botanical name rather than relying on the trade label alone. What is Honduras mahogany used for?
The Kew and CITES timber guide documents S. macrophylla timber in trade for furniture, paneling, musical instruments such as guitars and ukuleles, and sports equipment such as billiard tables. These are documented uses of the species; they do not verify the identity or responsible sourcing of every product sold under a Honduran mahogany label.

How dense is the wood?
PROSEA reports a density range of 485–840 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content for plantation-grown wood. The accessible entry does not state a publication year, and the range should not be treated as a universal value for every tree or board. PROSEA notes that plantation-grown trees often weigh somewhat less than trees from the species’ natural distribution. PROSEA species entry.
Is Honduras mahogany endangered or restricted in trade?
Kew reports that Swietenia macrophylla was assessed as Vulnerable (VU A1cd+2cd) on the IUCN Red List in 2021. That is the date of the assessment reported on Kew’s page, not a claim that the species was reassessed in 2026. Kew also lists the species in CITES Appendix II. Kew species profile.

The 2023 CITES timber guide gives 26 November 2019 as the current Appendix II listing date. Appendix II listing does not, by itself, mean every finished item is banned or that every transaction has identical requirements. Rules can depend on the product’s form, source country and destination, as well as applicable national requirements. - Species: Ask for the botanical name Swietenia macrophylla, not just “mahogany” or “Honduran mahogany.”
- Origin and documentation: Ask where the wood came from and request supporting sourcing and trade documents appropriate to the product and destination.
- The actual piece: Review its dimensions and visible grain or figure, and confirm that it suits the intended use. A common name or a general description cannot authenticate an individual board.
