You may be able to find free firewood through your city, an authorized public-land program, storm-cleanup notices, or a local wood owner—but none is guaranteed, and “public land” does not mean you can take wood. Start with your city or county’s official pages, then confirm the exact source, permission, pickup terms, and transport rules before you load anything. Without your location, no particular program or public parcel can be confirmed.
Where to look for free firewood near you
Search locally for phrases such as “free firewood,” “wood pickup,” and “tree removal logs.” Treat each result as a lead to verify, not as permission to collect. These six places are worth checking:
-
City parks, forestry, or public works
Search your municipality’s website or call its parks, forestry, or public-works department. Ask whether wood is available now, who qualifies, where and when pickup happens, and whether logs are cut, split, or ready to burn. Some municipal offers are seasonal, resident-only, first-come, and subject to unpredictable supply.
For example, the City of St. Louis wood-pickup program offers city residents wood from dead or structurally damaged trees removed from streets and parks during a seasonal window. The city warns that daily supply is not guaranteed; logs may be large, unsplit, and variable in size and species, so collectors need to haul and process them. Its residency rules, dates, locations, and hours apply to St. Louis, not to other cities.

Public-land permits and designated collection areas
Contact the specific land manager—such as a national forest, state forest district, Bureau of Land Management office, or provincial natural-resource district—to ask whether a current personal-use permit is available. Confirm the marked collection area, allowed species and material, dates, limit, vehicle routes, and any fire-season or transport restrictions.
Rules differ by jurisdiction. Pennsylvania requires a permit to take firewood home from state forest land; British Columbia requires a Free Use Permit for personal-use cutting on Crown land and says district conditions vary; Allegheny National Forest publishes its own conditions. Seeing dead wood beside a road, or holding a permit from somewhere else, does not establish permission. Check the relevant agency’s current directions: Pennsylvania state forest firewood permits, British Columbia Free Use Permits, and Allegheny National Forest firewood permits.

Storm cleanup or emergency tree-debris announcements
After a storm, check local government news releases and public-works pages for logs explicitly offered as firewood. Follow the active notice’s pickup hours, access limits, and loading instructions; do not assume a debris pile is open to the public.
A 2018 City of Danville, Virginia notice offered tree trunks collected after Tropical Storm Michael at no cost on a first-come basis. Residents had to cut and load the wood and were barred from entering the fenced storage area. That was a historical, location-specific offer, not a current pickup opportunity.

Local tree-removal and arborist companies
Call local tree-care firms and ask whether a crew has logs available for customer pickup, whether the wood is truly free, where it came from, and whether the company is authorized to offer it. Availability and terms are not established generally; some companies may have disposal arrangements or charge. Never enter a worksite or take roadside material without permission.
-
Neighbors and community exchange groups
Ask neighbors, neighborhood groups, or local free-item boards about wood from storm-felled or recently removed trees. Confirm with the owner exactly which wood may be taken, when and where you can access it, and who is responsible for cutting and cleanup. An online post alone is not proof of ownership, permission, or safe access.

Municipal wood yards, transfer stations, or recycling facilities
Check official city or county pages for a specifically described firewood, log, or waste-wood pickup program. Confirm that the material is fuelwood—not chips or brush—and ask whether there is a fee, whether the wood is green or seasoned, whether tools are allowed, and whether staff must direct loading. A facility that handles wood waste may not offer firewood.
How to compare local offers
“Free” logs can still cost time, fuel, equipment, and effort to process. Compare the practical terms before making the trip:

- Eligibility and certainty: Is pickup limited to residents or permit holders? Is supply available now, or first-come and unpredictable?
- Pickup logistics: Check the location, hours, appointment rules, access route, loading arrangements, and whether staff must be present.
- Condition and effort: Ask whether wood is cut, split, seasoned, or green, and what tools and processing it will require.
- Total hauling cost: Consider travel distance, vehicle capacity, load security, and whether the amount available justifies the trip.
- Public-land conditions: Verify the exact boundary, permit limit, allowed species and material, road access, dates, and fire restrictions with the land manager.
- Transport rules: Check current local guidance before moving wood across county, state, provincial, or other boundaries.
Permission, safe cutting, and transport
Get authorization before cutting, loading, or entering a collection site. Only collect at the location and within the area named by the owner or active agency notice. Protective equipment does not make unauthorized cutting lawful.
For authorized cutting, Allegheny National Forest safety guidance lists a hardhat, chaps, safety glasses, and hearing protection as examples of safety equipment. It also advises people not to cut alone, to check vehicle hauling capacity, and to secure loads. Follow the land manager’s instructions for the site and task.
Moving firewood can spread invasive insects and disease. British Columbia advises planning to burn wood where it was collected or purchased; check current local quarantine and agency guidance before transporting it. See British Columbia’s firewood movement guidance.
A current, location-specific permit example
On September 21, 2026, the National Park Service announced free firewood permits in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The stated limit was six cords per family per year; permits were required before removal, issued first-come while supply lasted, and valid in those parks—not neighboring forest lands. Check the National Park Service announcement for its terms. It is an example of one dated local offer, not evidence of availability elsewhere.
