Build the storm-cloud look with a brimmed hat, polyester fiberfill and optional battery-powered lights. Add felt raindrops and a gray or silver outfit if you like. The DIY guides below offer practical ways to make the costume; they do not establish one canonical version or confirm the steps of a specific TikTok trend video.
What you’ll need
- A brimmed hat or similar headpiece base
- Polyester fiberfill, Poly-Fil or other suitable stuffing
- Optional battery-operated LED or twinkle lights
- Optional gray spray paint
- Optional blue felt and blue yarn for raindrops
- Gray or silver fabric for a tunic, or clothing you already own
These materials reflect the approaches described by Rae Gun Ramblings’ cloud costume guide and Country Living’s DIY costume roundup. Treat the extras as optional; neither guide establishes a required product brand or specific light model.
Make the cloud headpiece
- Choose a base. Start with a brimmed hat that can support the added stuffing. The guides describe hat-based versions, including a black sombrero in Country Living’s instructions.
- Attach the stuffing. Add polyester fiberfill or other stuffing around the hat to form an uneven, fluffy cloud silhouette. Build the shape gradually so the hat remains wearable.
- Add optional lights. If you want a lightning effect, incorporate battery-operated lights into the cloud. The guides describe this option but do not specify a model, runtime, brightness or weather rating.
- Darken the cloud if desired. Short sprays of gray paint are one guide’s way to create a stormier look. Paint is optional; follow the product label and let it dry fully before wearing the costume.
The guides present variations rather than one mandatory recipe: Rae Gun Ramblings lists a hat, Poly-Fil, gray spray paint and battery-powered twinkle lights, while Country Living describes adding flashing battery-operated LEDs to a black sombrero, covering it with stuffing, then adding more lights and stuffing.

Felt raindrops
For a falling-rain effect, cut large raindrop shapes from blue felt and attach them with blue yarn, as described by Country Living. You can omit them for a simpler cloud-only costume.
