Look up a ZIP code or click a location to see its zone, then use that result as a broad guide to perennial plants’ winter cold tolerance—not as a guarantee that a plant will survive every winter or thrive in every part of a yard.
What a USDA gardening zone tells you
A USDA Plant Hardiness Zone describes the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature for a location: the average of that location’s lowest temperature in each year over a 30-year period. The 2023 map uses weather data from 1991–2020. It is not an all-time record low, nor a forecast of the coldest temperature a place will experience.
Gardeners use the zone mainly to compare the winter cold tolerance of perennial plants. Plant listings often give a USDA zone range, which can help you judge whether a plant is likely to tolerate typical winter lows where you live. Read the plant’s specific guidance as well: a zone is one useful factor, not a complete growing prescription.
How zones and half-zones work
The map has 13 zones, numbered from zone 1, the coldest, to zone 13, the warmest. Each full zone spans 10°F and is divided into two 5°F half-zones:

- “a” is the colder half of a zone.
- “b” is the warmer half.
For example, 7a is colder than 7b; both belong to zone 7. Half-zones make it easier to distinguish locations that fall within the same broader 10°F band.
How to find your USDA zone by ZIP code
- Open the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
- Enter your ZIP code in the map’s Quick Zip Code Search, or click your location on the interactive map.
- Use the displayed zone as a regional cold-hardiness reference. If you need a map for offline use, the USDA map downloads page offers state, regional, and national maps for printing.
A ZIP-code result does not resolve every difference within a neighborhood or yard. The map’s estimates are spatial approximations, and a site’s slope, exposure, shelter, or other very local conditions can create a microclimate too small to appear on the map. Without a location or ZIP code, there is no single zone that can be assigned to a reader.

What changed in the 2023 map?
Released on November 15, 2023, the 2023 map was the first USDA update since 2012. USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group developed it using 1991–2020 climate data. Its estimates draw on weather-station records and account for factors such as elevation, coastal influence, temperature inversions, and terrain. A mapped raster value remains an estimate, not a direct temperature measurement at every point.
- The map used 13,412 weather stations, compared with 7,983 for the 2012 edition, according to USDA Agricultural Research Service.
- USDA reported that about half the country shifted to the next warmer half-zone, while the other half remained in the same half-zone.
- For Alaska, mapped detail improved from 6¼-square-mile areas to ¼-square-mile areas.
Boundary shifts reflect more than one factor: the newer 30-year period, additional station data, and improved mapping methods all contribute. A change in a mapped zone, on its own, is not a reliable measure of global climate change.

How to use your zone without over-relying on it
Use the zone to screen perennial plants for typical winter cold, then consider the conditions the map cannot capture at the scale of your garden. A severe cold snap can damage or kill a plant even if it is rated for your zone, especially when it is near the cold edge of its recommended range. Yard-level microclimates can also differ from the mapped area.
If your zone changed in the 2023 edition, USDA advises against automatically removing plants or changing what you grow. Treat the updated result as a revised regional reference and weigh it alongside plant-specific recommendations and the conditions you observe at your site.

Coverage and official guidance
The 2023 map covers the United States and territories, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. USDA describes it as a resource for gardeners, growers, and researchers across those regions. Its guidance emphasizes that a zone update is not by itself a reason to remove established plants or overhaul a garden.
