The headline “The Frame Design Awards crown the world’s best interiors” refers to the inaugural Frame Awards winners announced in 2018—not a definitive ranking of every interior in the world. The awards, now called the FRAME Awards, recognized projects across many categories. Among the reported winners were the People’s Pavilion for sustainability, Heatherwick Studio’s Zeitz MOCAA for innovation, and X+Living as Designer of the Year.
What the 2018 headline means
Rich Haridy’s New Atlas report, published on 27 February 2018, covered the first Frame Awards. It described more than 30 categories spanning project types and design themes, including retail, hospitality and experimental material use. “The world’s best interiors” is headline language for the awards’ selected winners; it should not be read as proof of an exhaustive or objectively measured global ranking.
The report distinguished jury prizes from People’s Choice awards. In most categories, it said, an audience-selected winner accompanied the official jury winner. Haridy observed that the People’s Choice selections tended toward visually spectacular spaces, while jury choices often favored conceptual work. That is the report’s characterization of this award set, not a universal rule about design competitions.

Why the People’s Pavilion mattered to builders
New Atlas reported that the People’s Pavilion used 100% borrowed materials and was assembled without screws, glue or drilling. The report describes friction steel straps, nylon slings and steel cables as the means of holding it together, with the connections intended to make the materials reusable. That is a project-specific account from 2018, not a claim that every component was reused or that the approach suits every building.

How the FRAME Awards work now
The program is currently presented by FRAME as the FRAME Awards. Its official program page says the awards launched in 2018 and calls the 2026 program the ninth edition. FRAME reports over 1,000 submissions globally each year. The 2018 winners above belong to the inaugural edition; they are not winners of the current cycle.
FRAME describes the program as covering “the entire spectrum of interiors, spatial and product design, as well as the people behind them.” Its current structure separates spatial projects and products from executional themes, while honorary awards recognize people and studios selected and nominated by FRAME rather than through public submissions.

What the current judging criteria say
The 2026 submission guide says juries score entries from 6.0 to 10.0, with the resulting badge bands defined as follows:

For spatial and product entries, the guide directs submitters to address form, innovation, functionality and eco-social impact. Executional categories narrow the focus: colour entries are judged on the colour scheme, light entries on the use and effects of light, and material entries on the use and effects of material. These are current 2026 criteria and should not be assumed to describe the inaugural 2018 judging process.

Eligibility for the 2026 edition
Under FRAME’s 2026 submission guide, eligible work must have been completed and released to its intended audience after 1 January 2024. That cutoff applies to the 2026 edition; eligibility can differ in later cycles. FRAME says submissions are published on frameweb.com and automatically considered for both Winner of the Month and Winner of the Year, with monthly expert panels reviewing entries.
