Mar-a-Lago is a historic Palm Beach estate that now operates as a private membership club. Developed by Marjorie Merriweather Post in the 1920s, it later became known for Donald Trump’s ownership, its proposed—but unrealized—role as a winter presidential retreat, and land-use agreements governing its club use.
What is Mar-a-Lago?
Mar-a-Lago is at 1100 South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach, Florida. The Associated Press describes the property as 17 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway; its name means “sea-to-lake” in Spanish. The setting is part of the estate’s identity: it occupies the narrow stretch of land between the ocean and the waterway.
Today, it is both a historic estate and a private club. The club’s own website describes a membership-based operation and lists events, golf, guest suites, a spa and recreation. Those are the operator’s descriptions of its offerings; they do not mean the property is a public attraction or that visitors may enter freely.
Who developed the estate?
Marjorie Merriweather Post developed Mar-a-Lago in the 1920s. The club says the estate opened in January 1927 after four years of construction; the Associated Press also identifies 1927 as its construction year. The sources establish Post as the developer, but do not provide enough detail to identify every architect, contractor or building phase.

Post later proposed that the estate serve as a winter presidential retreat. The Smithsonian reports that the federal government declined the arrangement in 1981, and the property returned to the market. The proposal did not result in an operating federal retreat. Donald Trump bought the estate in 1985. Published accounts differ on the purchase price: Smithsonian Magazine reported $8 million for the estate and furnishings, while the Associated Press described the total as about $10 million.
How did Mar-a-Lago become a private club?
The club’s present use is connected to approvals and agreements with the Town of Palm Beach, rather than being simply a change in how the estate was marketed. A 2025 New York appellate opinion recounts that the town approved a special-exception plan for social-club use and that the town, Trump and the club entered a Declaration of Use Agreement in 1993. Preservation and development-rights documents followed in 1995 and 2002.

These instruments are also central to a continuing disagreement over the property’s permitted uses. The 2025 appellate decision contains competing interpretations; neither should be presented as an uncontested summary of what the documents allow.

The decision also discusses a Palm Beach County attorney’s 2021 view that residence as a bona fide club employee was not prohibited. That view is part of the court’s account of the dispute, not a substitute for the competing judicial analyses. The opinion quotes a reversion clause that applies under specified abandonment conditions; that conditional provision should not be treated as the whole agreement or as an unconditional transfer rule.

Can the public visit Mar-a-Lago?
The sources establish that Mar-a-Lago is a private membership club, not that the general public may tour or otherwise enter the grounds. The club advertises events and other amenities, but the pages reviewed do not establish public access rules or whether a nonmember can attend a particular event. Anyone seeking entry or event information should confirm the current arrangements directly with the club.

The Associated Press reported in 2023 that the club had a 500-member limit, a $500,000 initiation fee and annual dues of $20,000. Those are dated reported figures, not confirmed current terms. The club’s membership page reviewed for this account does not state current prices or whether applications are available, so neither today’s cost nor current availability can be established from that page.

The AP’s 2023 report also described valuation arguments tied to the property’s club operations and noted a lack of comparable properties. Those estimates belong to the context of that report and are not a current appraisal.
