There is no single best portable generator for every job. In Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide, the top-scoring models are split across large portable, midsize portable, and midsize inverter categories. Choose by the loads you need to run, startup surges, fuel preference, noise tolerance, and how you plan to move and connect the unit—not by score alone.
2026 guide winners at a glance
These category scores and approximate prices are from Consumer Reports’ 2025-published buying guide titled CR Buying Guide 2026: Generators. Prices are guide figures, not current retail quotes, and claimed output is not the same as a guarantee of performance under every load.
| Category | Top-scoring model | Overall score | Fuel | Claimed output | Approximate guide price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large portable, 7,000–8,000W running-watt class | Generac XT8500EFI | 75 | Gasoline | 8,500W | About $1,100 |
| Midsize portable, 2,500–4,900W running-watt class | Firman P03628 | 81 | Gasoline | 3,650W | About $700 |

Which category fits your project?
Large portable: more capacity, more weight
The Generac XT8500EFI is the guide’s large portable winner. A unit in this class may suit a jobsite or outage plan with several substantial loads, but first add up the equipment you intend to run and account for motors’ startup surges. Consumer Reports notes that generators rated above 7,000W often weigh 200 pounds or more, so consider how it will be transported and positioned before choosing one.

Midsize portable: a practical middle ground
The Firman P03628 leads the guide’s midsize portable category. Consumer Reports’ guide places these models around 2,500–4,900W and describes them as options for smaller homes, boats, and RVs. Quartz’s September 2026 summary reports an estimated 13–24 hours per tank for the Firman based on Consumer Reports testing; actual runtime depends on operating conditions and load.
Midsize inverter: consider fuel flexibility and the comparison set
The dual-fuel Generac IQ3800DF is the highest-scoring midsize inverter in the guide, with claimed output differing by fuel. Two other close models in that category are the Predator 5000 Watt Dual-Fuel Super Quiet with CO Secure and Honda EU3000iS with CO-MINDER, each scoring 85. Those scores are useful within that category; they should not be read as directly comparable to scores in other categories, where the models and category comparisons differ.

What the test scores measure
Consumer Reports says its testers apply household-type loads, such as a space heater, refrigerator, or window air conditioner, and check how a generator handles both ongoing demand and the sudden voltage draw when a compressor starts. Its guide evaluates several dimensions:
- Power delivery: wattage delivered and response to surges across varying loads.
- Power quality: smooth output and consistent voltage.
- Noise: measurements taken at 23 and 50 feet.
- Ease of use: starting, transport for portable models, and useful features such as fuel shutoff.
- CO safety: shutoff response as carbon monoxide builds in an enclosed space and emissions in a partially enclosed space.
The score combines performance across the guide’s tests, while the listed output and fuel type are product claims. See Consumer Reports’ explanation of generator testing and selection and its 2026 buying guide.

Size the generator to the loads you actually need
Write down the appliances or tools that must operate together, then check their running wattage and startup demand in their manuals or on their labels. A refrigerator or window air conditioner can demand extra power when its compressor starts. A generator that appears adequate based only on steady running watts may struggle when that surge coincides with other loads.
Consumer Reports describes camping and tailgating generators as generally up to 2,500W, midsize units as roughly 2,500–4,900W, and large models as 7,000W or more. Treat those bands as a starting point, not a substitute for matching the unit to your specific equipment.

Fuel, runtime, and safe operation
Gasoline and dual-fuel options differ in the fuel they accept, and the Generac IQ3800DF’s claimed output is lower on propane than on gasoline. Consumer Reports gives a broad estimate of about 6–18 hours per tank of gas for portable generators; that is a category-level note, not a model-specific promise. Fuel, load, and operating conditions affect runtime.
Never run a fuel-burning portable generator indoors or in an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, and exposure can be fatal. A CO shutoff is a safety feature, not permission to operate the generator in an unsafe location. Follow the manufacturer’s placement and operating directions. Consumer Reports’ testing considers CO shutoff response and emissions; its guide also cautions that safety performance does not replace safe use. Read Consumer Reports’ safety guidance.

Plan the electrical connection before buying
If you intend to supply circuits through a home breaker panel, do not connect a portable generator directly to the panel without an appropriate transfer arrangement. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide estimates an additional $450–$1,500 to buy and install a transfer switch or interlock kit. That is the guide’s estimate; the appropriate equipment and installation depend on the home’s electrical system. Have a qualified electrician determine what is suitable for your panel and installation.
