Health Canada advises not using silicone bakeware above 220 °C (428 °F) and warns that food can slide out quickly when hot. That is practical guidance, not proof that every silicone product and every use condition has been conclusively assessed.
How to use silicone bakeware safely
- Check the product’s instructions and use it only for its stated purpose.
- Follow the manufacturer’s temperature limit, and do not exceed Health Canada’s published advice of 220 °C (428 °F) for silicone bakeware. Health Canada’s consumer guidance, page-dated September 8, 2025, says: “Don’t use silicone bakeware at temperatures above 220 °C (428 °F) as it will melt if exposed to high temperatures.” Health Canada’s cookware and bakeware guidance.
- Take care when removing hot food: flexible bakeware can bend, and food may slide out rapidly. Support the bakeware and handle it carefully.
The 220 °C figure is Health Canada’s consumer advice for silicone bakeware; it should not be treated as a universal specification for every silicone item. Follow the product-specific instructions as well.
What is known about chemical migration?
Silicone bakeware can contain different siloxanes. Health Canada describes polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) as one example and notes that short silicone chains may remain from some manufacturing processes. Its scientists are investigating whether PDMS moves from bakeware into food or indoor air during baking.
Health Canada’s project uses bakeware from varied sources and types, an oil-and-sand food simulant, common baking temperatures, air monitoring, and later extraction and analysis of the simulant. The department’s page describes this work as ongoing; it does not report final migration measurements or a completed risk conclusion for the tested bakeware. The same update says a 2023 Health Canada assessment found siloxanes were not harmful to human health or the environment. That broader assessment is not a product-specific finding about every pan, mold, batch, or baking condition. The bakeware investigation is intended to add information for continued risk assessment.
What FDA food-contact review does—and does not—mean
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that food-contact substances that qualify as food additives must be authorized for their intended use. Its safety assessment includes migration and toxicological data. This describes the general regulatory process; it does not establish that every retail silicone bakeware item has received a product-specific FDA endorsement. - Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
FDA guidance for industry says migration studies should reflect the most severe intended time and temperature conditions, the expected food types, and the proposed use. Its reference classifications include food types and conditions such as cooking above 250 °F. These are testing categories for food-contact assessments—not a consumer temperature limit for silicone bakeware and not a result showing that a particular item does or does not release substances. Official sources reviewed do not establish an overall health-risk ranking of silicone versus metal, glass, or ceramic. For a practical choice, compare the intended-use and temperature instructions for the specific product, how flexible it is, and how easily you can support it when moving it while hot. These are usability considerations, not proof that one material is safer overall.
