Carpet types are easiest to compare on two separate axes: construction, which describes how the pile is formed, and fiber, which describes the material in the pile. Choose both for the room’s traffic, appearance, cleaning needs, and the product maker’s specifications; no single fiber or style is best for every space.
Start with construction and fiber as separate choices
Construction describes the carpet surface and how its yarn is arranged or finished. Fiber is the material forming that pile. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) identifies nylon, polyester, polypropylene (olefin), triexta, and wool as the five primary pile fibers used in most U.S. carpet production. Each has different performance characteristics, but a fiber name alone does not establish how durable a particular carpet will be.
CRI advises comparing construction, density, pile height, yarn twist, and loop size for heavy-traffic use. The specific product’s specifications matter more than a broad claim about a fiber. CRI’s carpet-selection guidance and its carpet FAQ explain these factors.
What are the main carpet constructions?
Cut pile
In cut pile, yarn loops are cut to create upright fibers. The common styles include textured plush, Saxony, frieze, and plush. Tighter yarn twist helps the pile hold its shape. Textured plush and frieze can make footprints and vacuum marks less noticeable; smooth plush tends to show them more readily and may suit lower-traffic or formal rooms.

Loop pile
Loop pile keeps yarn in loops rather than cutting it. In level loop, loops are a similar height, creating a uniform surface that CRI describes as suitable for high-traffic areas. Berber is often made with level loops and flecks of darker color. Loop size and tightness still matter when comparing products for heavy use.
Multilevel loop
Multilevel loop uses loops at two or three heights to create a pattern and a casual surface. The height variation is part of the design, so compare the product’s construction and intended use rather than assuming all loop carpets perform alike.

Cut-loop

Which carpet fiber should you choose?
The main U.S. pile-fiber categories are nylon, polyester, polypropylene (olefin), triexta, and wool. CRI identifies differences among fibers in attributes such as abrasion resistance, texture retention, stain and soil resistance, colorfastness, cleaning needs, and color clarity. The available guidance does not establish a universal ranking across all five for price, durability, or stain performance.

Compare the attributes stated for the exact carpet you are considering, alongside its construction and maker’s care instructions. Avoid treating a fiber label as a complete performance rating: density, pile height, twist, and loop design also affect how a carpet suits a room.
How to match carpet to a room
- Entryways, halls, stairs, playrooms, and other busy spaces: Consider dense construction, shorter pile, tighter twist in cut pile, or smaller, tighter loops. Ask the seller or manufacturer for specifications relevant to your traffic level.
- Bedrooms and formal rooms: A softer or smoother appearance may be a priority where traffic is lighter. Keep in mind that plush surfaces can show footprints and vacuum marks.
- Rooms where marks or soil are a concern: Textured surfaces, frieze, and patterned or multicolor designs may make footprints, vacuum marks, or soil less conspicuous than a smooth, uniform surface.
- Sunlit rooms: Consider the room’s light when judging color. Take samples home and look at them under the lighting in the space; carpet color can appear different under different light.
Room use, traffic, entry access, activity, sunlight, and desired appearance all belong in the decision. CRI recommends considering these factors and viewing samples in the home. Its shopping guidance offers additional selection context.

Commercial carpet has different use cases
For corridors and public areas, including spaces with rolling traffic, CRI describes low, dense loop carpet as one suitable option. Cut pile or cut-and-loop may suit some administrative spaces. These are application-specific examples, not universal recommendations for every home or commercial building. Select the product for the space’s actual use and performance requirements. Modular carpet and carpet tiles are formats to consider where replaceable sections or layout flexibility matter; CRI discusses them in its commercial carpet guidance and facility-specific considerations.

Cushion and installation
Cushion requirements vary with carpet construction, so check the carpet maker’s instructions rather than choosing padding independently. Installation is also part of the finished carpet system. CRI publishes separate installation standards for residential and commercial applications.
