To choose an automatic dishwasher, start with capacity and kitchen fit, then compare the EnergyGuide label, ENERGY STAR certification, wash cycles, soil sensing and drying options. These checks help narrow the field, but they do not identify a universally “best” model: certification measures energy and water use, not cleaning performance, reliability, noise or installation fit.
What to look for when buying a dishwasher
Use the following criteria to compare models that fit your kitchen and budget. Confirm dimensions and installation requirements in the current manufacturer documentation; energy labels alone do not establish whether an appliance will fit an existing opening.
Capacity for your household
ENERGY STAR defines a standard dishwasher as one that holds at least eight place settings and six serving pieces. A unit below that capacity is compact. A compact dishwasher can use more energy over time because it handles fewer dishes per load, so compare capacity against how often you expect to run it. ENERGY STAR’s dishwasher guidance explains the distinction.
Energy use and estimated cost
Read the EnergyGuide label to compare estimated annual electricity use and cost across similar models. The figures are estimates, not a promise of what a household will pay: actual costs depend on utility rates and use. If certification matters to you, also check the specific model in ENERGY STAR’s certified residential dishwasher listings.

Water use and certification
ENERGY STAR Version 7 criteria, effective July 19, 2023, set maximums of 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle for standard dishwashers, and 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle for compact dishwashers. These are eligibility ceilings, not a guarantee that every certified model uses exactly those amounts or delivers a particular cleaning result. The ENERGY STAR criteria page provides the program limits.
ENERGY STAR estimates that a standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 per year to operate and saves about 5,800 gallons of water over its lifetime. Those are program estimates; your results will vary with the appliance, household use, water and electricity prices, and the comparison baseline. Cycles and soil sensing
Look for cycles that suit the loads you actually wash, such as lightly soiled dishes versus heavily soiled cookware. ENERGY STAR describes an auto-sensing cycle as detecting whether the water coming off dishes is dirty or clean and adjusting operation accordingly. Cycle availability and names vary by model, so check the product specifications and manual rather than assuming every dishwasher offers the same options.
Drying options and other model details
Compare drying methods and whether the machine offers a no-heat drying option. ENERGY STAR suggests considering rinse aid with no-heat drying. Also verify installation dimensions, noise ratings, warranty, controls and current price directly in model documentation and retailer listings. The available ENERGY STAR criteria do not compare these features or establish which model is quieter, more reliable or better at cleaning.

How to compare dishwasher models
Make a short list only after confirming each candidate can be installed in your kitchen. Then compare the same facts for every model:
- Capacity classification and place-setting capacity
- EnergyGuide annual electricity use and estimated cost
- ENERGY STAR certification status, if relevant
- Water use per cycle, where stated
- Available cycles and whether soil sensing is included
- Drying method and rinse-aid guidance
- Dimensions, installation requirements, noise rating, warranty and current price
Use certification and labels to compare resource consumption, not as a substitute for independent cleaning or reliability evaluations. No model ranking follows from the ENERGY STAR limits alone.

Dishwasher vs. hand washing dishes
ENERGY STAR estimates that switching from handwashing to an efficient dishwasher can save about $220 a year in utility bills and more than 230 hours of personal time over a year. These are approximate program estimates, not guaranteed savings for an individual household; the outcome depends on how dishes are washed, dishwasher use, local utility costs and other conditions. The figures are presented in ENERGY STAR’s current dishwasher guidance.
How to use a dishwasher efficiently
- Scrape, do not pre-rinse. Remove food scraps and load the dishes. ENERGY STAR says modern detergents are designed to clean scraped dishes, and its guidance is headed “Scrape don’t rinse.”
- Run full loads when practical. Waiting for a full load can make better use of the water and energy needed for a cycle.
- Use the rinse feature if dishes will sit overnight. ENERGY STAR recommends this when dirty dishes are left in the machine before a wash.
- Follow the appliance manual. Use its instructions for detergent, loading, cycles and maintenance; consider rinse aid if using no-heat drying.
For the distinction between ENERGY STAR’s standard and compact thresholds, consult the current dishwasher criteria. The separate ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation is year-specific: its 2025 standard-unit criteria allowed no more than 225 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle, for recognition from January 1 through December 31, 2025. Those criteria, released in September 2024, describe the 2025 recognition period and should not be read as 2026 criteria. Details are on the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025 page.
