If a Hillrom bed will not move, is beeping, or shows a warning, first find the bed’s model label and consult the current instructions for use (IFU) for that exact model. Controls and alert meanings differ across the Hillrom range. Perform only checks the applicable IFU permits; for persistent faults or safety concerns, contact your facility-authorized maintenance team or Baxter/Hillrom support.
Start with the model and the right instructions
Record the bed’s model name and any identifying information on its label, then locate its current IFU through Baxter/Hillrom’s documentation portal. Similar-looking beds may use different controls, battery behavior, and alert procedures, and the manual revision matters. If you are in a care facility, identify the person or department authorized to maintain the bed before troubleshooting.
Keep the patient safe and follow your facility’s procedures while checking the manual. Do not open electronics, replace a motor, alter wiring, or bypass a lockout unless you are authorized and working from the model’s service documentation.
Why won’t my Hillrom bed move?
There is no single reset or power fix that applies to every Hillrom bed. Use the applicable IFU for basic power and battery checks; do not repeatedly cycle power or dismantle components as a substitute for the model-specific procedure.

- For a Centrella Smart+ bed, the IFU says battery backup with sufficient charge can operate caregiver articulation controls, but bed-exit and scale functions do not operate on battery power. Other powered features may also be limited. Connect the bed to AC power as directed by the IFU and follow facility procedure for patient safety. Centrella Smart+ Bed IFU, Rev 21.
- A Centrella Smart+ excerpt from Rev 22 says a fully depleted battery may take up to 24 hours to reach operational status. This timing is revision-specific; verify the current IFU for the exact bed before relying on it. Centrella Smart+ Bed IFU, Rev 22.
- For a Progressa ICU bed that fails to respond to user inputs, the IFU directs: “Warning—If the bed fails to respond to user inputs, unplug it and have it serviced.” Follow the facility’s procedure and refer the bed to authorized service rather than attempting further repairs. Progressa ICU Hospital Bed IFU, Rev 15.
These examples are model-specific; they are not interchangeable troubleshooting instructions for other Hillrom beds.
Why is my Hillrom bed beeping?
Interpret a beep or visual alert using the exact model’s IFU. On the Centrella Smart+, the Brake Not Set alert is visual and audible when the bed is plugged into AC and its brake is released. The IFU says setting the brakes or unplugging the bed for transport silences the alert. Use the appropriate action for the bed’s situation and follow facility procedures; do not assume a similar alert on another model means the same thing. Centrella Smart+ Bed IFU, Rev 21.

What does “Service Required” mean on a Hillrom bed?
On the Centrella Smart+, the touchscreen’s Service Required indicator means the bed detected a malfunction. The Rev 21 IFU says: “Contact your facility-authorized maintenance persons or local Baxter representative for assistance.” Treat the indicator as a service escalation, not an invitation to reset or repair the bed yourself. Other models may display different alerts with different meanings. Centrella Smart+ Bed IFU, Rev 21.
When to stop using the bed and call maintenance
Remove the bed from service when the applicable IFU or facility procedure requires it. In particular, stop and escalate if the bed is unresponsive, a power cord is damaged, fluid has reached electronics, movement is abnormal, or you notice an unusual sound or burning odor. Do not return a bed affected by fluid exposure to service until it is dry, examined, tested, and found safe, as directed in the applicable instructions.

The Compella Bariatric Bed System IFU directs users to refer a damaged power cord or fluid exposure to facility-authorized maintenance or Baxter Technical Support, and to report unusual sounds, burning odors, or movement deviations. It also states: “The bed has no user serviceable parts.” Those directions apply to Compella; use the relevant IFU for other models. Compella Bariatric Bed System IFU, Rev 13.
