If an induction cooktop won’t detect a pan, first check whether the pan’s underside is magnetic, large enough for the selected zone, and centered on it. Then check the cooktop’s controls and display. A magnet test is a useful first screen, but the appliance’s own manual is the authority on minimum pan-base size and indicator meanings.
Why an induction cooktop may not detect a pan
Induction zones rely on the magnetic properties of cookware to detect it. A pan can fail to register if its base is not sufficiently ferromagnetic, if the magnetic area is too small for the selected zone, or if the pan is poorly positioned. A control setting or model-specific indicator can also be involved.
How to troubleshoot detection

Check the pan’s underside with a magnet
Hold a magnet against the bottom of the pan. If it sticks, that is a useful sign that the base is magnetic, but it does not prove the pan will work on every zone. Common compatible cookware includes cast iron, enameled steel, and stainless steel designed for induction. Some stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and nonstick pans do not have a suitable magnetic base; others have only a limited magnetic area. Compare the magnetic base with the zone
Look at the diameter of the ferromagnetic area on the pan’s underside—not just the rim—and use a cooking zone suited to that area. A base that is too small may not activate a zone. The minimum detection size varies by cooktop model, so use the manual for your exact appliance. Whirlpool offers sizing guidance, but it is not a universal measurement; Bosch’s owner’s manual also shows that detection depends on the magnetic base’s diameter and material. Its thresholds may not apply to your cooktop.

Center the pan on the appropriate zone
Set the pan in the middle of a zone that corresponds to the diameter of its magnetic base. Bosch and Whirlpool both advise suitable cookware and positioning; see Bosch’s induction troubleshooting guidance and Whirlpool’s operating troubleshooting steps.

Check the controls and display
Confirm that you selected the intended zone and power level, and check whether a lock or pause function is active. Note any flashing symbol or error code and look it up in the manual for your exact model. Symbols and their meanings differ among manufacturers and models.

Test the pan and zone separately
If available, try a known induction-compatible pan on the suspect zone. Then try the suspect pan on a different, appropriately sized zone. If the known-compatible pan also fails after you have checked positioning, sizing, and controls, consult the cooktop manual and contact the manufacturer’s support team. Do not attempt an internal repair based on a generic troubleshooting guide.
What a flashing indicator can mean
Indicators are model-specific. For example, Whirlpool documents a “U-u” indicator for cookware that is unsuitable, improperly positioned, or the wrong size for the selected zone. In the Whirlpool guidance for that indicator, the zone switches off if no pan is detected within 30 seconds. What to check if you need a different pan
If your current pan fails the magnet test or still is not detected after placement and zone checks, compare cookware using these criteria:
- Induction compatibility: Look for an explicit induction-compatible designation and check the material of the pan’s magnetic base.
- Magnetic-base diameter: Compare the ferromagnetic area—not the rim—with the minimum stated in your cooktop manual for the intended zone.
- Flatness and placement: Choose a flat base that can sit centered on the zone.
There is no single pan diameter that suits every induction cooktop; check the appliance’s requirements before choosing a replacement.
