Yes. An operating induction cooktop generates electromagnetic fields, including stray magnetic fields beyond the cooking zone. This is non-ionizing radiation—not the kind produced by X-rays or radioactive materials. Current guidance supports practical steps to reduce exposure, but neither a blanket claim that induction cooktops are dangerous nor a guarantee of zero risk in every circumstance is justified.
What “radiation” means with an induction cooktop
Induction cooking uses electromagnetic fields to heat compatible cookware. Some magnetic field can extend beyond the pan and cooking zone. The relevant concern is exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF), not ionizing radiation such as X-rays. What the evidence says about safety
There is no sound basis here for treating every induction cooktop as dangerous, or for promising that exposure is zero in all use. WHO distinguishes established effects at high exposure from uncertainty about some possible long-term outcomes. It also cautions that guideline values are not a precise line separating safety from harm. Its broader discussion is not a current, device-by-device test of induction appliances.
WHO reports established acute effects from extremely low frequency magnetic-field exposures well above 100 µT. That is broad ELF evidence, not an induction-cooktop-specific limit or a practical threshold to compare directly with fields at a hob. Different field frequencies and test conditions matter. How to reduce exposure while cooking
The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) fact sheet dated 3 February 2026 says magnetic-field strength decreases as distance from the hob increases. It recommends keeping about 15 cm away as a practical measure—not as a demonstrated hazard boundary.
- Keep some distance: FOPH recommends about 15 cm from the hob.
- At maximum power, use a rear cooking zone: this can increase the distance between the operating zone and your body.
- Use suitable cookware that is not too small: center it on the cooking zone and follow the appliance maker’s instructions.
- If close to the hob, reduce power where appropriate: FOPH notes that reducing power can reduce magnetic-field load at small distances.
These are practical exposure-reduction steps, not proof that a particular distance or pan removes all exposure. FOPH’s current induction-hob fact sheet describes measurements on particular appliances; results can vary with appliance design, distance, power, cooking zone, and pan size and placement.

Why published measurements need context
FOPH’s 2026 fact sheet describes the reference level as maintained from 15–20 cm in the appliances tested. That is measurement context, not a guarantee for every model or cooking pattern.
An older FOPH fact sheet from 11 October 2016 cites 6.25 µT at 30 cm for a specified test using one cooking zone and a suitable pan that was large enough and centered. It is not a universal reading for everyday use. The older fact sheet explains the test context; the more recent FOPH NIR fact-sheet index lists the current guidance.

If you have a pacemaker or another implanted device
General EMF guidance does not answer every question about interference with implanted electronic medical devices. WHO states: “Guidelines do not protect against potential interference with electromedical devices.” If you use a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, ask its manufacturer and your clinician for guidance specific to your device and circumstances. FOPH also recommends consulting the manufacturer and doctor.

- Distance from the hob at which the field was measured
- Power setting and cooking zone used
- Whether one zone or several were operating
- Cookware compatibility, size, and centering
Suitable, correctly sized cookware is part of FOPH’s practical advice, but the evidence does not establish that buying a particular pan independently makes exposure safe or prevents health effects.
