A fiddle-leaf fig is Ficus lyrata, a tropical evergreen often grown indoors in temperate climates. Give it bright, filtered light, a draining pot and growing medium that stays moderately moist, and adjust care to the plant’s conditions rather than following a fixed watering calendar. Leaf drop, yellowing and browning can have several causes, so check the light, moisture and recent changes before deciding what is wrong.

Choose the right indoor spot

Place the plant where it receives bright indirect light or partial shade. Protect it from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves. These recommendations apply to an indoor houseplant; outdoor guidance varies by climate and growing context. North Carolina State University Extension reports best performance above 55°F and at medium relative humidity, but that temperature is not a guarantee that a plant will thrive just above it. North Carolina State University Extension’s plant profile gives its houseplant height as 2 to 10 feet and its height in native habitat as 60 to 100 feet.

If you move a plant from a brighter setting to a dimmer one, make the transition gradually. A University of Florida IFAS guide for commercial interiorscapes describes excess leaf drop when plants produced under high light are moved to lower light. Treat that as a caution about abrupt changes, not a household trial result.

Light advice for outdoor plants should not be mixed with indoor advice. The Royal Horticultural Society describes full sun for sheltered, frost-free outdoor locations and full or filtered light under glass. Its H1B rating is part of the UK system: it indicates a plant that can be grown outdoors in summer but needs protection from colder conditions, not a hardiness rating to apply directly to other climates. RHS: Ficus lyrata

Water for moisture and drainage, not by a fixed schedule

Use a container with drainage holes and a growing medium that retains some moisture while draining well. Check the medium and the plant’s conditions before watering; pot size, light and household conditions vary, and the cited sources do not establish a universal watering interval. Avoid keeping the medium persistently waterlogged or letting it become too dry. Both overwatering and underwatering can be associated with leaf drop, according to North Carolina State University Extension. UC ANR also describes the plant as disliking soil that is too wet or too dry: UC ANR, “Fiddle Leaf Fig Houseplant – Proper Care”.

The University of Florida IFAS commercial interiorscape guide associates green leaf drop with excessively wet growing media and root death in that setting. A dropped green leaf alone does not prove root rot; low light and other stressors may also be involved. UF/IFAS, “Cultural Guidelines for Commercial Production of Interiorscape Ficus”

Diagnose leaf problems by checking several conditions

One symptom rarely identifies one cause with certainty. Inspect the growing medium, light exposure and recent changes in placement or care. The clues below include observations from a commercial interiorscape guide, so use them to direct your checks rather than as a definitive home diagnosis.

  • Leaf drop: Check whether the medium has been too wet or too dry and whether the plant has recently experienced a change in conditions. The UF/IFAS guide also associates green leaf drop with low-light stress.
  • Yellow leaves or small red spots beneath leaves: The UF/IFAS guide associates yellow leaf drop and small red spots on leaf undersides with moisture stress. Treat these as reasons to inspect moisture conditions, not proof of a particular problem.
  • Scorched, dry or shriveled leaves: Strong direct sun can scorch leaves, according to North Carolina State University Extension. The UF/IFAS guide also associates dry, shriveled leaves with low relative humidity or excessive sunlight.
  • Bent branches: The UF/IFAS guide lists bent branches among signs associated with moisture stress; check the growing medium and other conditions before drawing a conclusion.

Inspect for pests and prune carefully

Check leaves and stems for scale, aphids, mealybugs, thrips and spider mites. The RHS profile specifically lists red spider mite, thrips, mealybugs and scale for plants under glass. RHS: Ficus lyrata

Prune as needed. North Carolina State University Extension recommends wearing gloves when handling the plant, particularly during pruning or propagation, because its sap can irritate skin. It also warns that the plant is toxic to people, cats and dogs if ingested, with possible oral irritation, excessive drooling and vomiting. Keep it away from people and pets likely to chew it. North Carolina State University Extension

Propagate with cuttings or layering

Propagation options listed by the University of Florida IFAS include layering and cuttings. The RHS also lists seed, leaf-bud and semi-hardwood cuttings. These sources identify methods but do not establish a success rate, so results should not be assumed. Wear gloves when propagating because of the irritating sap.

Keep size and setting in perspective

The fiddle-leaf fig is a houseplant in many temperate homes, but Ficus lyrata can grow into a large tree in suitable outdoor conditions. UF/IFAS gives a landscape-tree height of 25 to 50 feet in its 2018 profile; that is not the expected height of every indoor plant. Its profile also covers landscape and container uses, rather than reporting a controlled indoor-growth trial. UF/IFAS, “Ficus lyrata: Fiddleleaf Fig”

The RHS lists a maximum height of 4–8 metres and 10–20 years to maturity on its profile; those figures are profile guidance, not a comparative growth trial. Indoor size depends on growing conditions and should not be inferred from a landscape-tree figure.
