The durable approach is to find where they are active, remove food, water and shelter, seal routes inside, then use targeted control if needed and keep monitoring.
Start by finding where roaches are active
Look in warm, dark, moist places: kitchen and bathroom cracks, cupboards, behind or beneath appliances, and near likely entry points. Sticky traps placed along wall edges, inside cupboards, under appliances and near exterior doors can reveal where activity is concentrated. Check them daily at first and note where you catch roaches; traps help locate activity, but are not a stand-alone eradication method.
Identification matters because some species, including German and brownbanded cockroaches, can live and breed indoors, while American, Oriental and Turkestan cockroaches may enter from outdoor populations. The management plan can depend on the species and source. UC IPM’s cockroach guidance explains how to inspect and manage common species.
Remove food and water every day
- Keep food in tightly sealed containers and clean crumbs and spills promptly.
- Use a tight-lidded trash container and remove rubbish regularly.
- Do not leave pet food or water out overnight.
- Repair leaks and reduce condensation so sinks, pipes and other areas do not provide dependable moisture.

Reduce shelter by clearing excess cardboard, paper piles and clutter, and vacuuming cracks and areas behind appliances. Inspect packages, furniture, appliances and stored items before bringing them inside; roaches can arrive with belongings as well as through building openings.

Seal cracks and openings, especially around pipes and other penetrations, and check doors and windows for gaps. Add a door sweep or weather stripping where an exterior door does not close tightly. Small gaps count: UC IPM notes that an adult German cockroach can hide in a crack just 1/16 inch wide.
Choose control methods for the problem you found

Baits are not immediate: UC IPM says it may take seven days or longer before fewer roaches are seen after bait use. That is guidance, not a guaranteed timeline. Place bait near likely harborages as directed by its label, and avoid putting it where children or pets can reach it.

Sprays alone are not a lasting prevention strategy. UC IPM warns that foggers or bombs can be hazardous and may disperse roaches; do not rely on them as a substitute for sanitation, exclusion and targeted control. Follow all pesticide label directions and keep children and pets away from treated areas. The EPA’s pest-control do’s and don’ts offer further safety guidance. Product registrations and labels vary by location, so use only products permitted where you live.

After activity appears controlled, continue checking traps and keep up the cleaning, moisture control and sealing work. If roaches keep appearing, review trap locations and reassess food, water, hiding places, entry routes and bait placement rather than simply applying more spray. Serious, persistent or complex infestations may warrant a licensed pest-control professional.

For outdoor species, reducing damp, sheltered areas near the building may also help. UC IPM suggests a 6-to-12-inch gravel strip around a building perimeter as one context-specific way to reduce moisture and make the area less hospitable to outdoor cockroaches; it is not a universal requirement.

Roach droppings and body parts can trigger asthma, and proteins in their feces and saliva can cause allergic reactions or asthma symptoms in some people, according to the EPA’s asthma guidance. Routine cleaning helps reduce debris, while addressing the infestation source helps limit new material.

This ongoing combination of prevention, monitoring, identification and appropriate control is integrated pest management. The CDC describes it as not attracting pests, keeping them out and getting rid of them with the safest effective methods when they are present: What Is Integrated Pest Management?. UC IPM’s detailed guidance is California-oriented and was updated in December 2019; local species, pesticide registrations and labels can differ.
