Sew a camping silverware holder by laying out your own utensils first, drafting a fabric shell that folds over them, and stitching pockets where each item will sit. This makes a portable cutlery roll that keeps reusable utensils together and lets you adjust the fit for your actual set.

Choose a construction approach

Two tutorial approaches offer different ways to build a roll. Susie Osborn’s Make: camping silverware holder uses a drafted fabric shell, sewn pocket divisions, hook-and-loop tape, and fabric ties. Deb’s Days describes a separate version using main and lining fabrics, batting, bias tape, and ribbon in its roll-up cutlery holder tutorial. Choose one approach and follow its construction sequence rather than mixing their supply lists.

Feature Make: approach Deb’s Days approach
Body construction One drafted shell, turned and topstitched Main and lining fabrics with batting and bias tape
Closure Hook-and-loop tape plus ties Ribbon is listed; the tutorial provides its own construction details
Layout Draft around the reader’s own utensils Use the separate roll-up tutorial’s design
Supply emphasis Duck fabric, thread, hook-and-loop tape Fabric, batting, bias tape, ribbon, and sewing tools

Gather materials and tools

For the Make: version, Osborn lists approximately 1½–2 yards of duck fabric, matching thread, and one yard of ¾-inch hook-and-loop tape. Treat the yardage as a starting point: the amount depends on how many utensils and extra tools you plan to carry, and the tape should be checked against your finished holder width. The tutorial estimates 1–3 hours, but actual time depends on your pattern and sewing pace.

  • Duck fabric and matching thread
  • ¾-inch hook-and-loop tape
  • Sewing machine, straight edge, scissors, straight pins, pencil, and knitting needle
  • Paper for drafting a pattern

Deb’s Days’ distinct supply list includes main and lining fabric, batting, bias tape, ribbon, pins or fabric clips, an iron, matching thread, sewing machine, rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat. Its associated video tutorial describes a roll for camping, picnics, and road trips.

  • Multi-purpose organizer: Ideal for storing utensils, office supplies, craft materials, or remote controls
  • Four open compartments: Keep items separated and easy to grab for efficient organization
  • Portable with handle: Built-in top handle makes it easy to carry from desk to kitchen or picnic table
  • Durable mesh design: Metal mesh construction is sturdy, lightweight, and easy to clean
  • Compact size: Measures 7 inches long x 10 inches wide x 4.75 inches tall (17.78 x 25.4 x 12.07 centimeters)

Draft the pattern around your utensils

  1. Lay out the contents. Arrange the silverware and any additional utensils you intend to carry. Leave enough space between items for pocket seams and room to remove each utensil.
  2. Sketch the three sections. On newspaper or other pattern paper, draw an upper flap, a lower section that will form the pockets, and a center section between them. Position the tallest items so the flap will cover them when folded.
  3. Check the folds before cutting. Fold the paper pattern over the arranged utensils as the holder will fold. Confirm that the top flap protects the contents and that the lower pocket section has enough depth to hold them.
  4. Add seam allowance and account for the fabric fold. The Make: project places the pattern’s right edge on the fabric fold and adds ½ inch for specified seams. Those are that tutorial’s directions, not universal dimensions; adjust the outline to your utensils and the seams you plan to sew.
  5. Cut the fabric. Cut the shell from the folded fabric according to the checked pattern.

Sew the shell and finish its edge

  1. Place the shell pieces right sides together and sew around the outside, leaving a 6-inch opening for turning, as in the Make: tutorial.
  2. Turn the shell right side out through the opening. A knitting needle can help ease corners; press the fabric flat.
  3. Topstitch around the edge, closing the turning opening as you sew.

Plan and stitch the pockets

Set the utensils on the shell again and mark the pocket divisions to match their widths. Sew the pocket lines from bottom to top; the Make: tutorial recommends this direction to reduce fabric buckling. Before stitching, check that the pocket bottoms will support shorter utensils rather than letting them slip down.

For shorter pieces, mark their pocket bottoms and sew across those points. If you are carrying extras such as a bottle opener or wine opener, add separate fabric pockets sized for those tools. Optional labels can be made from non-fraying liner fabric.

Add the closure and ties

For the Make: design, position the hook-and-loop tape by folding the holder around its tallest utensil and checking where the two sides meet. This makes placement responsive to the contents rather than relying on a fixed measurement.

That tutorial’s ties are two strips measuring 2½ by 36 inches. Sew each strip, turn it right side out, press, and topstitch. Position both ties on the back of the holder and sew them securely in place. To pack the roll, fold the top flap over the utensils, roll the holder, and tie it closed.

Protect knife blades

Do not put an uncovered knife into a fabric pocket: its blade can cut through the holder. Use a fitted knife cover. If one is unavailable, the Make: tutorial suggests making a temporary sheath from cardboard and tape; keep the cutting edge fully enclosed before packing.
