Angi’s 2026 national estimate puts garage door replacement at $1,231 on average, with most of its observed projects costing $754–$1,707. These figures, based on 15,434 verified Angi Pro projects, are a useful US planning range—not a guaranteed price for your home. Door size, materials, installation scope, and local conditions can move a quote substantially.
What does a garage door replacement usually cost?
Angi’s 2026 guide reports a national average of $1,231 and says most homeowners pay $754–$1,707. Its figures reflect completed Angi Pro projects; they do not establish what an installer in a particular area will charge or exactly what each project included. Use them to frame a budget, then compare local estimates with matching specifications. Angi’s 2026 cost guide
A separate benchmark is much higher, but describes a specific modeled project rather than a typical quote: Zonda Media’s 2025 Cost vs. Value project priced replacement at $4,672. It assumes a 16-by-7-foot insulated steel door rated at least R-12, new tracks and hardware, and reuse of the existing opener. The report summary says 268% of project cost was recouped in its resale-value analysis. That is a modeled comparison for this defined project—not a promise of what a homeowner will spend or recover when selling.

Door size and number of doors
Angi’s 2026 guide gives these broad per-project ranges:

- ---High-quality galvanized hinges and top brackets are very resistant to rust,Cable 7'height 1/8 thickness.
- ---Complete maintenance kits, convenient all-in-one packaging to meet all needs.
- ----The garage door kit can match most residential garage doors up to 7 feet in height, making the old door run quieter and more stable.
- ---Professional garage door opener and hardware manufacturers have a history of more than 20 years, guaranteeing free replacement for 3 years or refund without reason, no need to worry about buying.
| Configuration | Guide range |
|---|---|
| One-car door | $500–$3,000 |
| One double door for a two-car garage | $800–$5,000 |
| Two single doors for a two-car garage | $1,200–$4,900 |
Custom opening dimensions or two separate doors can mean different materials and installation work than a single standard door. Angi’s buying guide describes a standard single door as generally 8–9 feet wide and 7–8 feet tall, and a double door as about 16 feet wide; measure the actual framed opening rather than relying on a typical size. Material, style, and finish

| Fiberglass | $800–$2,700 |

Style and customization matter too. The same guide lists sectional doors at $500–$1,800 and carriage-house doors at $1,200–$8,000. Windows, decorative hardware, and specialty finishes can add to the price.
Insulation and opener work
Angi estimates insulated doors at $1,100–$4,200. R-value is the manufacturers’ measure of insulation capacity; compare the rating and door construction on the actual options in your quote rather than treating all insulated doors as equivalent.

Angi estimates that changing from a manual door to an automatic setup adds $200–$1,300. Smart, app-connected openers can fall toward the higher end, and new wiring may require electrical work. If you are keeping the existing opener, ask the installer to confirm compatibility with the new door and whether any opener work is included.
Labor, removal, permits, and repairs
Angi’s 2026 guide gives typical labor of $200–$500 when itemized separately, with an average of $350. Many installers bundle labor into an all-in price, so a quote that does not show a labor line is not necessarily door-only. The guide also gives $50–$200 for separately charged removal of the old door, and $40–$120 for a permit when one is required. Standard replacements often do not need a permit, but structural changes can; check local requirements.
Rank #4
- QUIET: Nylon Wheel reduces garage door noise by at least 75% compared to standard steel rollers
- DURABLE: 6200ZZ Bearing rated 25x standard roller for 200,000 door open and close cycles at 190 lb. load providing maximum durability
- PROTECTIVE CAPS: Front and back sealed caps prevents dust & grime from penetrating roller
- EXTRA LUBRICATION: lubrication groove on roller to disperse lubrication over extended period
- 100% LIFETIME GUARANTEE: In the rare event a roller fails, we will send you a new roller
Hidden damage can change the scope after the old door comes out. Angi cites $155–$380 as a potential structural repair cost for problems such as water damage or rot. Ask how the contractor will price and approve framing repairs if they are discovered during installation.
Location and installation complexity
National guide ranges cannot account for your local labor market, access, number of workers, or project complexity. A local estimate based on the actual opening and a written scope is more useful than comparing broad averages alone.

How to compare replacement quotes
- Confirm the opening and configuration. Measure the framed opening and determine whether you need one single door, one double door, or two separate doors. Share those measurements with each bidder.
- Set a like-for-like specification. Compare the same size, material, insulation/R-value, windows, finish, and opener plan. If a quote includes an opener, note its model and whether wiring is part of the work.
- Request itemized scope and total installed price. Check whether each estimate includes the door, installation labor, tracks, hardware, removal and disposal, opener work, permits, and warranty. A door-only price is not comparable to a complete installed replacement.
- Clarify repair and change-order terms. Ask what happens if rot, water damage, or other framing problems are found after removal, and require approval of added work and its price before repairs proceed.
- Compare several local contractors. Angi recommends getting a few quotes and prioritizing function before optional styling. For a tighter budget, Angi reviewer Bob Tschudi, a Raleigh-based general contractor, recommends starting with a standard, no-frills door and opener so the budget can go toward features that are harder to change later.
Is replacing a garage door a DIY job?
Door replacement involves heavy components and high-tension springs. Angi warns that mishandled springs can cause serious injury and recommends professional replacement for safe handling and proper alignment. Do not treat spring removal or installation as a casual DIY task; use a qualified professional for the replacement work.
