RTINGS names the Dyson V15 Detect its overall pick, while Ideal Home selects the Dyson V16 Piston Animal in its UK roundup and Tom’s Guide chooses the Dyson Gen5Detect. Those different winners reflect different markets and test programs. For a practical choice, match the vacuum’s format and floorhead to your floors, pets, cleaning routine, and storage space.
How to choose the best vacuum cleaner for your home
Start with the work the vacuum must do, rather than a ranking. A model that is convenient for stairs and quick cleanups may not be the best choice for long sessions on thick carpet. Check the exact regional model and included floorhead: similarly named products can come with different bundles.
- Flooring: Consider bare floors, low-pile rugs, thick carpet, or a mix. A motorized powerhead is the more reliable choice for pet hair on thicker carpet; a straight-suction head suits bare floors. Check whether the brushroll can be switched off for delicate or hard surfaces.
- Hair and upholstery: Look separately at pickup on floors and furniture, hair tangling, and whether the brushroll can be removed or cleaned.
- Format and reach: Cordless sticks are handy for frequent quick jobs and stairs. Corded uprights and canisters keep running without a battery limit, but require managing the cord and outlet placement.
- Dust disposal: Bagged and bagless designs differ in how dust is contained during emptying. Bags add a recurring consumable; filtration while vacuuming and dust released during emptying are separate considerations.
- Ownership fit: Consider weight, noise, handling, storage footprint, battery replacement, and local availability. Exact repair costs, lifespan, and replacement-part compatibility are not established by the cited guides.
For pet hair, RTINGS says cordless sticks are easiest for frequent quick cleaning, while corded uprights and canisters trade convenience for uninterrupted runtime and often stronger carpet performance. Its guide favors a motorized powerhead for carpet; an air-driven turbo brush is lighter and cheaper but may struggle on thicker pile. RTINGS’ pet-hair vacuum guide explains its categories and model recommendations.

| Use case | Candidate | Why it stands out | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| General-purpose cordless | Dyson V15 Detect | RTINGS names it its overall pick for versatility and grab-and-go use, and its pet-hair guide calls it the best tested pet-hair vacuum. | RTINGS reports strong particle-filtration and pet-hair-pickup scores, but a weaker air-quality score during dustbin emptying. The exact scores are described below. |
| Canister for a larger, mixed-floor home | SEBO Airbelt D4 | RTINGS calls it its best canister and notes strong bare-floor and pet-hair performance, plus a nearly 40-foot cord. | RTINGS reports a weight just under 22 pounds; the canister is bulky, and bag disposal can release some dust. |
| Mid-range cordless alternative | Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H | RTINGS lists it as a mid-range option, with strong results for small apartments and bare floors in its scoring. | It is heavier than the Dyson V15 Detect and has less runtime in max-power mode, according to RTINGS. |
| Canister alternative for pet hair | Miele Guard S1 Electro | RTINGS’ pet-hair guide highlights its performance on pet hair and furniture and its air quality during emptying. | Its hard-floor score is lower, so consider the surfaces in your home. |
| UK overall and budget context | Dyson V16 Piston Animal; Henry HVR160 | Ideal Home names the Dyson its overall pick and the Henry its budget pick in its UK guide. | Ideal Home lists the Henry at £179.99; that is a UK, source-specific listing, not a universal or guaranteed current price. Verify local model names, bundles, and availability. |
| Carpet-focused option | Shark Stratos AZ3002 | Tom’s Guide recommends this model for carpet and describes its pickup as strong. | Tom’s Guide notes its 17-pound weight. This is the AZ3002, not another Shark Stratos model number. |

What the test scores do—and do not—tell you
RTINGS’ 2026 pet-hair guide says it had tested over 110 vacuum cleaners. For the Dyson V15 Detect, it reports scores of 9.5 for pet-hair pickup, 9.9 for particle filtration, and 4.0 for air quality during emptying. These are separate RTINGS model scores, not a general rating of all vacuums or a guarantee of results in your home. They illustrate why cleaning performance and dust containment during disposal should be judged separately.

Ideal Home says its 2026 roundup draws on more than 100 vacuums assessed over three years, with a minimum of two weeks of testing per vacuum. That is the publisher’s stated work behind its guide, not an industry-wide sample. RTINGS reported rechecking availability for its overall guide on October 1, 2026; stock and listings can change after that date.
Cordless or corded: which format makes sense?
A cordless vacuum avoids a power cord and can be easier to carry on stairs or use for small, frequent cleanups. The trade-off is finite battery runtime and eventual battery wear. A corded model can run continuously, but reach depends on cord length and outlet location. If you clean a large area in one session, consider whether a canister or upright’s reach and handling suit the layout; for stairs or a small flat, a bulky canister may be inconvenient.

- Quick release handle for effortless above floor cleaning. Attach the crevice tool or dusting brush to the end of the handle for cleaning upholstery, windows and other hard to reach places.700.0 watts.Specific uses:hard floor, carpet, dual action
- Powerful all floor suction extracts dirt and hair from hard floors and carpets ease. It’s 10.5” wide cleaning path gets the job done quickly
- Lightweight at only 7.7 pounds with its compact and featherweight design this vacuum can store in any space in your home and be carried anywhere

- Includes a crevice tool and dusting brush which snaps on the vacuum and are within reach at any time during cleaning
As one example of that trade-off, RTINGS reports that the SEBO Airbelt D4 has a nearly 40-foot cord and weighs just under 22 pounds. Those figures describe this model in RTINGS’ 2026 guide, not canisters generally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bagged or bagless: compare emptying, not just pickup
RTINGS reports better air quality during emptying for bagged designs in its tests, while replacement bags add an ongoing cost. Bagless models avoid buying bags but still require emptying a dustbin. The Dyson V15 Detect’s RTINGS results show why the distinction matters: its particle-filtration score is not the same measure as air quality when dust is emptied. A vacuum’s results alone do not establish that it will relieve allergies.

Check before you buy
- Confirm the complete model number and regional variant; do not assume a similar name means the same floorhead or bundle.
- For carpet and pet hair, verify that the package includes a motorized head suited to your pile. For bare floors, check the head’s fit and whether a brushroll can be switched off.
- For a cordless model, confirm what battery is included and consider whether its runtime suits your cleaning sessions, especially if you expect to use max power.
- For a bagged vacuum, check local bag availability and cost; for either type, check filter and battery availability for the precise model before relying on compatibility.
- Check current local price, stock, and seller. A UK price or product bundle may not apply in the US or another market.
