Motion-Activated Coffee Machine: How to Build a Toothbrush-Triggered Coffee Maker

A motion-activated coffee maker is a DIY sensor-and-relay project, not a standard appliance category. See how the toothbrush-triggered build works and what to consider.

A “motion activated coffee machine” is best understood as a DIY automation project, not an established category of off-the-shelf appliance. In the documented toothbrush-activated coffee maker, a PIR motion sensor detects movement, a controller sends an event, and a relay switches power to an ordinary coffee machine. The arrangement can start brewing as part of a morning routine, but motion detection does not verify who or what caused the movement.

What a motion-activated coffee machine actually is

Team Legend’s 2017 project is the clearest match for the phrase: a toothbrush-activated coffee maker built from a motion sensor, controllers, and a relay. Its premise is simple: movement near the toothbrush triggers a coffee-brewing sequence. This is a maker-built IoT setup rather than a standardized retail appliance type. Team Legend’s project description presents the build and its components.

The coffee maker itself can remain an ordinary household machine. The added electronics detect motion and control whether power reaches it; they do not alter the machine’s brewing mechanism.

How the documented build works

  1. Detect movement: A PIR motion sensor detects movement of the toothbrush and emits a digital signal.
  2. Send a trigger: The first Particle Photon publishes a brew-coffee event over Wi-Fi.
  3. Switch the coffee maker: A second Particle Photon subscribes to that event and drives a relay connected in series with the coffee maker’s household power.
  4. Run a timed brew window: The project code leaves the relay on for ten minutes, then turns it off. Further events are ignored while that programmed interval is underway.

This cloud-event arrangement has a network dependency between detection and switching. It should not be described as local-only control: the documented Photons exchange an event through the cloud. A different implementation could be designed around local logic, but the available project description does not establish such a version’s behavior.

BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Vortex Brewing
  • 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
  • SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
  • EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
  • DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
  • QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.

Parts and alternate controller

The Hackster build lists two Particle Photons, a generic PIR motion sensor, two breadboards, a Tolako 5V relay module for Arduino, and a DS18B20 digital temperature sensor. The DS18B20 is optional for basic triggering and brewing; it adds pot-temperature monitoring.

For component searches, useful terms are PIR motion sensor module, 5V relay module for Arduino, and waterproof DS18B20 temperature sensor. These are build components, not coffee-machine accessories. The project uses Particle Photon boards; a separate GitHub profile identifies perk-up as a UCLA ECE M119 final project using an Arduino Nano 33 IoT. That profile supports the board as an alternate controller path but does not provide a complete bill of materials or performance report.

  • WAKE UP TO HOT COFFEE: 24-hour programmable delay brew allows you to prepare your brew up to a day in advance.

Trigger reliability and control trade-offs

  • Motion is not identity: A PIR sensor detects movement, not whether the toothbrush user is present. Other movement or nearby air movement can potentially cause a trigger. Team Legend also notes that the toothbrush routine can be fooled by moving and replacing the toothbrush.
  • Cloud versus local behavior: The documented two-Photon design relies on a cloud event. If the Wi-Fi or cloud event path is unavailable, the documented trigger-and-relay chain cannot operate as described.
  • Fixed timing: The code’s ten-minute relay interval is a programmed duration, not a universal brew-cycle recommendation. A coffee maker that finishes earlier or requires a different operating sequence may not suit that timing without code changes.
  • Electrical switching matters: The relay is placed in the household-power path, so the design involves mains electricity as well as low-voltage electronics. The project’s parts list alone does not establish that a given relay, enclosure, wiring method, or installation is safe or suitable for a particular coffee maker. Use components rated for the appliance’s electrical load and an appropriately protected, enclosed installation; do not leave exposed mains wiring on a breadboard.

Optional temperature monitoring

The project can place a DS18B20 sensor in the coffee pot, publish readings to the cloud, and log them through an IFTTT spreadsheet workflow. Team Legend reports an average cooling rate of 0.4°F per minute after the machine turns off; that is the project’s reported observation, not a general coffee-maker specification. The project write-up describes the sensor and logging approach.

How this differs from smart-plug automation

A smart plug can make a coffee maker part of a schedule or condition-action rule, but that alone does not make it motion activated. Reolink’s smart-home guide uses a coffee machine connected to a smart plug as an example of automated behavior; it is not evidence of a motion-specific coffee product. See Reolink’s IoT devices guide. To call an arrangement motion activated, the trigger needs to come from a motion sensor or another sensor configured to respond to movement.
