How Much Does It Cost to Run a Fan All Night? An Expert’s Estimate, Explained

A fan’s overnight running cost is usually easiest to calculate from its wattage, how long it runs and your electricity rate. Using National Energy Action’s illustrative rate of 25.7p per kWh, a 50 W fan costs about 10.3p over eight hours. Electrical expert Chris Madikian, quoted by T3 in 2025, gives a broader estimate of £10–£20 added to monthly summer bills—but that figure depends on usage and tariff assumptions not specified in the article.

Calculate the cost for your fan and electricity rate

Use this formula:

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × electricity price per kWh

A kilowatt is 1,000 watts. An appliance drawing 1 kW for one hour uses 1 kWh, the unit suppliers use to bill electricity. National Energy Action explains the kWh calculation; check your fan’s label or manual for its wattage and your bill for your unit rate.

Worked example: a 50 W fan for eight hours

At NEA’s illustrative rate of 25.7p/kWh, an eight-hour run uses 0.4 kWh: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 8. That works out to about 10.3p for one night. Thirty nights at the same hours and rate would total about £3.08. These are calculations from NEA’s example inputs, not a personal bill estimate or a current universal UK electricity price. Your result changes with the fan’s actual power draw, setting, runtime and tariff.

How the expert’s £10–£20 monthly estimate fits

In a T3 article published on 12 July 2025, Lizzie Wilmot quoted Chris Madikian, Electrical Expert at The Local Electrician, saying a fan left running can add £10–£20 to monthly electricity bills during summer. Madikian also said the actual cost depends on the fan’s power rating and how many hours it runs each day. The article passage does not specify a particular fan, daily runtime or electricity rate, so the estimate is not a fixed expected cost for every household.

Use the estimate as an expert’s broad summer-cost warning, not as a substitute for calculating your own usage. The formula gives a more tailored figure when you know your appliance’s wattage, hours and rate.

Pedestal fan 50–100 W Range reported by T3 in 2025 from Chris Madikian.

Large fan 75 W NEA illustrative example.

NEA’s illustrative examples use 25.7p/kWh and put a 20 W desk fan at 0.5p per hour, a 50 W pedestal fan at 1.3p per hour and a 75 W large fan at 1.9p per hour. Because the reported ranges and illustrative examples differ, treat each as source-specific guidance rather than a replacement for your own fan’s rating. See NEA’s fan-cost examples.

Settings and controls can change the total

Fan speed

Madikian told T3 that running a fan on its highest setting can use up to 40% more electricity than the lowest setting. This is his general reported claim, not a measurement for every fan model. If your fan has several speeds, the input wattage can vary by setting; check the manufacturer’s information if you need a setting-specific figure.

Timer or sleep mode

Madikian recommends using a timer or sleep mode to turn a fan off after you fall asleep. A shorter runtime reduces the hours in the cost formula; the saving depends on how long the fan would otherwise run and the power it draws.

Should an older fan be replaced to save money?

Madikian told T3 that a fan manufactured before 2018 may lack the energy-efficient motors found in newer models and that an older fan might cost twice as much to run as a newer equivalent. The article passage does not provide a comparative test, so this should be treated as his attributed warning, not a universal rule or proof that replacement will pay for itself. To compare options, use manufacturer-stated or measured watts at the speed you use, compare timer or sleep controls, and calculate costs using the same electricity rate and runtime.
