The Nespresso Vertuo Up is a compact, button-led coffee machine with a dedicated Coffee Creations setting for concentrated drinks over ice and in milk recipes. It is worth considering if you want that easy workflow and can live with Nespresso Vertuo capsules; it is not compatible with Original-line pods. The rotating water tank helps with counter layouts, but you should measure both the machine’s footprint and the clearance needed to open it.
What the Vertuo Up does
Nespresso’s US listing describes the Vertuo Up as a Vertuo-capsule machine with six cup sizes, from single and double espressos to 5-, 8-, 12- and 18-ounce coffees. It can brew hot drinks or drinks intended for ice. Its Coffee Creations button makes a concentrated extraction for iced coffee and milk-based recipes. The exact drink assortment and capsule availability vary by country, so check the local Nespresso site before buying.
Nespresso Australia lists drinks including ristretto, espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug, cold brew, iced long black and iced latte. That regional list should not be taken as a promise that every drink or capsule is sold in every market.
How the iced coffee button works
Coffee Creations produces a shorter, concentrated extraction intended as a base for drinks over ice or with milk. Nespresso’s Vertuo Up manual describes it as brewing “your concentrated, temperature-adjusted coffee for all your over-ice and milk-based recipes.” Follow the capsule packaging and choose the intended mode: Tom’s Guide reviewer Erin Bashford reported that, in her test, using an over-ice pod without selecting the iced setting produced an unpleasant hot drink.

A simple recipe to try
- Check that the capsule is intended for the drink you want, then select the recommended Coffee Creations or over-ice setting.
- Add ice to a recipe glass.
- Extract 230 ml of coffee over the ice, following Nespresso’s official Vertuo On Ice recipe. Nespresso labels that recipe “5 min” and “Easy”; it is one recipe, not a recommendation for every capsule.
The manual also gives format-specific cautions: use the recommended cup sizes for Coffee+ capsules and do not use Coffee Creations mode for specified formats, including Ristretto, XL, Cold Brew Style and Carafe Pour Over Style. Check the manual for your market and capsule format rather than assuming the iced setting works with every pod. One example of a capsule specifically described for iced coffee is Nespresso’s Ice Leggero, which the company characterizes as having mild fruity and cereal notes; availability is country-specific.
Which capsules fit?
The Vertuo Up takes Nespresso Vertuo capsules only, including XL capsules listed for the US machine. Nespresso Original-line capsules do not fit. That distinction is a key ownership tradeoff: buying this machine commits you to the Vertuo capsule ecosystem, and recurring capsule costs can matter more over time than the machine’s purchase price. Check current local capsule prices and assortment before deciding.

Will it fit under your kitchen cabinets?
Nespresso Australia lists the machine at 22 × 39 × 25.5 cm with the tank at the side, or 12 × 49 × 25.5 cm with the tank at the rear. Those are market-specific product-page dimensions and show how much the footprint changes with tank position. The Vertuo Up manual lists a 1.4 L water tank, approximately 4 kg machine weight, and three movable cup-support positions.
In her July 10, 2026 hands-on review for Tom’s Guide, Erin Bashford measured the machine at 4.7 inches wide and described the tank as rotating to the back or either side. She also noted that the pod mechanism lifts when opened and estimated that the setup needs 15.9 inches of overall clearance. Treat that clearance as one reviewer’s observation, not a universal installation specification: measure your own cabinet height with room for the mechanism to open and for you to load a capsule.

App controls and day-to-day tradeoffs
Bashford reports that the Nespresso Smart app can adjust drink volume and water temperature, start cleaning and water-emptying cycles, and show manuals. Those functions may appeal if you want more control than a machine’s buttons alone provide; consider whether you are comfortable relying on an app for customization and maintenance tasks.
In that same review, Bashford reported a brew peak of 70.9 dB and a small amount of coffee dripping before a subsequent extraction on her tested machine. These are observations from one unit, not guarantees about every machine. Her review also underscores the cost tradeoff between the initial machine purchase and recurring capsule spending; prices she observed are dated and should not be treated as current or universal.

Who should buy the Vertuo Up?
- A good fit: You want quick, button-led hot and iced drinks, a concentrated setting for over-ice or milk recipes, a tank that can be repositioned, and app-based drink adjustments.
- Think twice: You already own Original-line capsules, want freedom to use other pod systems, or are unwilling to check ongoing Vertuo capsule costs and local availability.
- Measure first: Your counter is tight, especially under cabinets. Account for the tank position, cup support and the clearance the lid mechanism needs when open.
Nespresso’s US product listing showed a price of $229.99 when its search result was captured; treat that as a dated listing, not a current quote. Check your local Nespresso retailer for today’s price, capsule selection and availability before purchase.
