Pond Armor’s Pond Shield is one manufacturer-specified option for water features, while DRYLOK Original has narrower guidance for fish ponds and birdbaths. For exposed concrete or stone that is not continuously submerged, a penetrating masonry sealer may be suitable—but verify the exact product instructions for your fountain’s exposure.
Start with how the fountain gets wet
A fountain surface may be continuously underwater, repeatedly splashed, or mostly exposed to rain and weather. Those are different uses. Match the product label to the actual exposure, and do not infer that an exterior masonry sealer can be used inside a filled basin.
- Continuously filled basin: Look for explicit water-feature or immersion guidance. Pond Armor lists fountains and water features for Pond Shield. DRYLOK says its Original Concrete & Masonry Waterproofer can be used for fish ponds and birdbaths after the specified cure period.
- Frequently splashed areas: Check whether the product instructions cover repeated wetting and whether it is suitable for the substrate and any existing finish.
- Exposed porous surfaces: A penetrating masonry sealer may help reduce water absorption while preserving a natural appearance. QUIKRETE’s Concrete & Masonry Waterproofing Sealer is described for concrete, masonry, brick, pavers, stucco, and natural stone; its cited product information does not establish suitability for continuous immersion or aquatic life.

There is no universal winner established by these sources: they provide manufacturer specifications and use guidance, not independent head-to-head testing of longevity or performance. Compare exposure, substrate, aquatic-life instructions, preparation, cure conditions, and the finish you want.
Check the fountain material and existing finish
Identify the basin and any liner before buying. Pond Shield’s manufacturer lists a range of substrates when properly prepared, but specifically says it will not adhere long-term to rubber or polyethylene/polypropylene liners. If the surface already has paint, sealer, or another coating, confirm compatibility; remove failing material rather than coating over a weak layer.

For QUIKRETE’s penetrating waterproofing sealer, the manufacturer says existing surfaces must be clean and dry and the product should not be applied over paint or stain or to nonporous, sealed surfaces. That product’s surface-preparation directions do not amount to approval for a submerged fountain basin.

Pond Shield
- Make sure the surface is clean, completely dry, structurally sound, and properly textured. Remove dust, oil, wax, loose material, and other contaminants; repair cracks before coating. Follow the current instructions supplied with the exact kit.
- Apply evenly to the manufacturer’s specified thickness. Pond Armor’s Quick Start guide calls for a minimum wet-film thickness of 10 mils.
- Inspect for thin spots, pinholes, missed areas, runs, and other defects before filling, and correct them according to the product instructions.
- Allow at least 24 hours of cure before use, as the Quick Start guide states. Project and environmental conditions can affect cure; Pond Armor’s FAQ says cooler conditions may require additional time and that no tacky areas should remain before water is added.
Pond Armor says Pond Shield is safe for fish and aquatic plants once fully cured. Treat this as the manufacturer’s claim and follow the exact kit instructions; do not add water or aquatic life before the coating has fully cured.

DRYLOK Original
For fish ponds or birdbaths, DRYLOK’s FAQ specifies 5–7 days of cure for Original Concrete & Masonry Waterproofer. The company warns that insufficient cure can cause excess foaming and may affect water quality. Its product page says to apply at least two coats for the waterproofing warranty and to schedule application when air and surface temperatures are at least 50°F. These directions apply to Original, not DRYLOK Extreme.
QUIKRETE penetrating sealer
For the cited Concrete & Masonry Waterproofing Sealer, QUIKRETE says new concrete must cure for at least 30 days before application. Apply only to a clean, dry surface that meets the product directions. The cited guidance does not establish this sealer for the inside of a continuously filled fountain.

As long as the surface you will work on is non-porous, this clear silicone caulk will do its job well.
Choose based on the label, not a broad “waterproof” claim
- For a basin that remains full, favor a product whose instructions explicitly cover water features or the relevant pond/birdbath use.
- Match the product to the basin material, liner, and existing coating.
- Check cure time and conditions before scheduling the fountain’s return to service; cure periods are product-specific.
- For surfaces exposed mainly to weather, consider a penetrating masonry sealer only when its stated substrates and use match the surface.
