Turn a clean butternut squash into Halloween decor with acrylic paint—no knife required. Paint it white for a simple ghost, add bandage lines for a mummy, or use painter’s tape to mask a graphic pattern. Wash and dry the squash first, and follow the directions on the paint you choose.
Choose a no-carve design

These approaches adapt published pumpkin and gourd decorating instructions from Caran d’Ache, Dulux and Rust-Oleum to a butternut squash. No comparative cost or durability testing is available.
What you’ll need
- One squash with relatively smooth skin
- Acrylic craft paint: white and black for a ghost, plus a contrasting color for a mummy or stripes
- A broad brush for the base coat and a smaller brush for details
- Painter’s tape if you want masked stripes or shapes
- A protected work surface and water for cleaning
Acrylic paint and brushes are directly used in the Caran d’Ache squash and pumpkin craft guide. Painter’s tape is optional for a masked design. The craft instructions do not establish that decorated squash is food-safe, so don’t treat a painted squash as edible.
Paint a butternut squash ghost
- Prepare the squash. Wash away soil with water, then dry it thoroughly. Cover your work surface. Smooth-skinned squash are easier to paint, according to the Caran d’Ache guide.
- Apply the white base. Use a broad brush to paint an oval ghost shape, or cover the squash in white if you prefer that look. Follow the paint label’s drying directions before adding details.
- Paint the face. With a smaller brush, add dark eyes and a mouth. Let the finished decoration dry according to the product label before handling or displaying it.
Make a mummy or masked pattern
Mummy
Start with a white base coat. Once it has dried as directed, paint dark or contrasting lines across the squash to suggest wrapped bandages. Googly eyes are an optional embellishment in the Dulux example; use them only if you can attach them securely and keep them away from young children who might put small objects in their mouths.

Stripes or shapes
Wash and thoroughly dry the squash, then place painter’s tape where you want the unpainted lines or shapes to appear. Apply paint according to its label, and remove tape at the stage the manufacturer specifies. Rust-Oleum’s directions for the particular product shown on its painted-pumpkin page call for removing tape while paint is slightly wet, with one-hour handling and 24-hour full-cure times. Those timings apply to that product’s instructions; don’t assume they fit another paint.
Keep decorating age-appropriate
Painting is a useful no-carve option for children. Oklahoma State University Extension quotes Gina Peek, its assistant director and Family and Consumer Sciences program leader: “All carving should be done by an adult.” The extension notes that younger children can draw designs with markers, glitter, paint and other art supplies. If you choose to carve instead, keep the knife work with an adult and use a battery-operated light or glow stick rather than an open-flame candle, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends. Its October 2022 release reported an estimated annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments over the preceding three years; 55% were related to pumpkin carving. These are estimates for that stated period, not current-year figures.
