Why Won’t My Toilet Flush? 6 Causes and How to Fix Them

Use the symptoms—rising bowl, weak flush, slow refill, or a handle that does little—to find whether the problem is in the toilet tank, trapway, or drain and vent system.

A toilet that will not flush usually has a problem in the tank, the toilet’s trapway, or the drain and vent system. Start with the symptom: a bowl that rises or empties slowly points toward an obstruction, while a handle that moves without releasing tank water points toward the handle chain. The checks below help you narrow down the cause without repeatedly flushing a bowl that may overflow.

Start with the symptom

What you notice First place to check
The bowl rises or drains slowly Trapway obstruction; if the problem recurs or other fixtures are affected, suspect a drain or vent issue.
The handle moves, but little or no water leaves the tank Handle chain connection and slack.
The flush is weak and the tank water is low, or the tank refills slowly Shut-off valve and the toilet model’s tank waterline.
The toilet keeps running or the tank refills by itself Chain slack and flapper seating; a worn flapper, flush-valve seat, or fill valve may also be involved.
The toilet gurgles, or bowl water is low while other fixtures drain Possible vent or drain obstruction; contact a plumber.

Six reasons a toilet may not flush

1. A blocked trapway or drain

If water rises in the bowl and then falls slowly, stop flushing until the water level is safe; another flush could overflow it. A toilet auger or another suitable clearing method may help with an obstruction in the toilet’s trapway. If the problem keeps returning or other fixtures are also draining poorly, the blockage may be farther along the drain system and require a plumber. Kohler lists trapway obstruction among the causes of poor flushing and advises: “Clear obstructions from the trapway, jet, or bowl rim holes.” (Kohler troubleshooting guide.)

2. A disconnected or slack handle chain

Remove the tank lid and check whether the chain connects the trip lever to the flapper or flush valve. If it has come loose, reconnect it according to the toilet’s instructions. If there is too much slack, the lever may move without lifting the flapper far enough to release water; adjust the chain as directed for that model.

3. Low tank water or restricted supply

A low tank level can leave too little water for a strong flush, and a partly closed shut-off valve can slow refill. Check that the valve supplying the toilet is fully open, then compare the tank level with the marked waterline or the model’s instructions. Waterline settings vary: Gerber, for example, says the tank level for its model should be about one inch below the overflow-tube opening, but that is not a universal setting (Gerber’s low-bowl-water guidance).

4. A dirty, worn, or misaligned flapper or flush-valve seal

A flapper that does not sit correctly can let water escape from the tank or fail to lift and release it properly. Check that the chain is not holding the flapper off its seat. Clean or reposition the flapper if appropriate for the model; replace it if it is worn or damaged. If the flush-valve seat is damaged, the seal or valve may need replacement. Match replacement parts to the toilet’s model and flush-valve design.

5. Blocked rim holes or jet

Water entering the bowl through the rim holes or jet helps create the flushing action. Mineral buildup or other debris can obstruct these passages and weaken the flush. Kohler identifies blocked rim holes or a jet as possible causes and provides model-specific rim-wash cleaning guidance. Follow the instructions for your toilet; access and flushing designs vary.

6. A soil-pipe or vent obstruction

A weak or slow flush can originate beyond the toilet. Kohler notes that water rising quickly and falling slowly can point to a clogged waste stack or vent (Kohler Assist: Poor Flush). Gerber says gurgling while other fixtures drain can indicate a blocked vent and advises asking a plumber for help. A shared drain or roof vent is not a routine tank adjustment; have a plumber investigate those symptoms.

Check the tank safely and systematically

  1. Take the lid off carefully. Set it on a stable, protected surface; tank lids can break if dropped.
  2. Operate the handle and watch the linkage. Confirm that the chain remains attached and lifts the flapper or flush valve.
  3. Check the water level and refill. Use the toilet’s marked line or model instructions, and make sure the shut-off valve is fully open.
  4. Watch how the flapper closes. It should return to its seat after flushing. Correct chain slack or inspect the flapper and valve seal if it does not.

Turn off the toilet’s shut-off valve before doing work that requires draining the tank, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adjustments or replacement parts.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • Water is rising in the bowl: do not keep flushing; allow it to fall before deciding whether to clear a toilet-level obstruction.
  • Several fixtures drain poorly, or the toilet gurgles: arrange a plumber’s inspection for a possible shared drain or vent problem.
  • Bowl water is low and there is water around the toilet base: a leak or crack needs investigation, not just a flapper adjustment. Gerber includes a hairline crack in the bowl trapway among possible causes of low bowl water; a wet base warrants prompt inspection.
  • A tank adjustment does not restore a proper flush: avoid forcing parts or guessing at model-specific settings; consult the toilet’s instructions or a plumber.
