The other mints on this list offer distinct citrus or fruity scents, decorative leaves, or a low groundcover habit. Whichever you plant, plan for containment: many mints spread quickly through underground runners.
How to choose a mint for your garden
Start with how you expect to use it, then consider the plant’s appearance and growth habit. Spearmint is a versatile first choice for tea and cooking, while peppermint brings a stronger, cooler flavor to sweets and drinks. Variegated and crinkled-leaf types add visual interest; Corsican mint grows low rather than forming a taller clump.
Names and classifications can differ between nurseries and references. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) estimates that the genus Mentha includes about 25 species, along with numerous hybrids and cultivated varieties. Treat the following eleven as useful choices, not a complete inventory.
| Type | Flavor or scent | Useful for | Distinctive look or habit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spearmint (Mentha spicata) | Sweet and mild | Tea, beverages, savory dishes | Versatile culinary mint |
| Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) | Strong, cool, menthol-rich | Candies, baked goods, tea, drinks | Hybrid of spearmint and watermint |
| Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) | Fruity fragrance and taste | Cooking or ornamental planting | Taller-growing mint |
| Chocolate mint (Mentha × piperita f. citrata ‘Chocolate’) | Chocolate-like aroma | Sweet dishes and drinks | Darker stems |
| Pineapple mint (Mentha suaveolens ‘Variegata’) | Fruity mint flavor | Ornamental planting and cooking | Creamy-white leaf margins |
| Orange mint (Mentha × piperita f. citrata) | Citrus aroma | Drinks and cooking | Scented variation |
| Ginger mint (Mentha × gracilis) | Mint flavor | Chewing gum flavoring and garden interest | Golden leaf veins and pinkish stems |
| Curly mint (Mentha spicata var. crispata) | Mint flavor | Drink garnish | Frilly, crinkled leaves |
| Corsican mint (Mentha requienii) | Not specified by Iowa State’s guide | Low groundcover | Very low-growing, up to about four inches; less rampant than the mints it profiles |
| Moroccan mint | Strong and sweet | Tea | Buy by its nursery label; the common name can refer to different plants |
| Lime mint | Lime-flavored leaves | Adding a citrus note | Small, glossy leaves |
Which mint suits each garden use?
For an all-purpose kitchen mint
Spearmint is a practical first plant if you want one mint to use in several ways. Iowa State University Extension describes its flavor as sweet and mild and recommends it for tea, beverages, and savory dishes. The RHS also recommends it as a choice for gardeners with room for only one mint.

For a stronger flavor in drinks and sweets
Peppermint is a hybrid of spearmint and watermint. Its higher menthol content gives it a more pronounced, cooler flavor than spearmint, making it a common choice for candies, baked goods, teas, and other drinks. If you are choosing mint for cocktails, consider whether you want spearmint’s milder character or peppermint’s more forceful cooling note.
For fruity, citrus, or chocolate-like scents
Apple mint offers a fruity fragrance and taste, and can serve as either a culinary or ornamental plant. Chocolate mint is recognized by its darker stems and chocolate-like aroma; the RHS describes its flavor as reminiscent of after-dinner mints. Orange mint contributes a citrus aroma, while lime mint has small, glossy leaves described by the RHS as lime-flavored. These scent and flavor descriptions help distinguish the plants, but they do not establish a specific intensity in a finished dish or drink.

For decorative foliage and garnishes
Pineapple mint’s creamy-white leaf margins make it especially noticeable in a pot or planting, and it is often grown ornamentally. Curly mint has frilly, crinkled foliage that works well as a drink garnish. Ginger mint adds golden veins and pinkish stems; Iowa State identifies it as the primary type used to flavor chewing gum.
For a low-growing patch
Corsican mint is a groundcover rather than a taller kitchen-herb clump. Iowa State describes it as the least rampant of the mints in its guide and gives its height as up to about four inches. Its different growth habit may suit a low planting, but it is not interchangeable with taller culinary mints when you want an easy handful of leaves.

For tea with a named variety
The RHS recommends Moroccan mint for tea and describes its flavor as strong and sweet. Because the common name may be applied to different plants, check the nursery label rather than assuming every plant sold under that name is identical.
Plan for mint’s spread before planting
Most mints are perennial, and many spread vigorously by underground rhizomes or runners. A plant that begins as a small pot can occupy more ground than intended if its roots are left unrestricted. Grow mint in a container, a raised bed, or another place where you can manage its spread.

- Use a container: The University of Maryland Extension recommends a diameter of 12 to 16 inches for growing mint in a home garden. Containers make spread easier to control, but their soil dries faster than garden soil.
- Use a barrier in the ground: The RHS suggests sinking a bottomless pot into the soil with its rim left above ground. The raised rim helps prevent shoots from rooting over the top.
- Keep a close eye on borders: Avoid placing an uncontained mint where its runners can move unnoticed into neighboring plants.
Give mint suitable light, soil, and water
Mint grows in full sun to partial shade. Iowa State recommends moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water during dry periods, paying particular attention to pots, which need more frequent watering because they dry out faster.
Pinching growing tips and harvesting leaves encourage fresh growth. Established container plants may need dividing or repotting every few years as they fill their pots.

Harvest and propagate mint
You can harvest leaves throughout the growing season. Choose young shoot tips when you want strong flavor. If you plan to dry leaves, Iowa State recommends harvesting just before or as flower buds develop. The RHS says freezing preserves mint flavor better than drying.
To reproduce a named cultivar reliably, divide an established plant or root stem cuttings. Plants grown from seed may vary, so seed is less dependable when you want to keep a particular named variety’s traits.
Check the label and intended use
Not every Mentha species or cultivar is suitable for food use. The RHS identifies pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) as harmful if eaten; do not use it as an edible mint substitute. Buy correctly named plants from a reputable supplier and confirm that the variety is intended for your use.
Common names can also be misleading: catmint (Nepeta) and Korean mint (Agastache rugosa) are not members of Mentha, even though “mint” appears in their names.
What hardiness guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Iowa State’s guide lists USDA Zone 5 hardiness for most of the types it profiles and Zone (5)6 for Corsican mint. These are figures from that guide, not guarantees for every cultivar, nursery plant, or local garden. Check the plant label and local growing conditions before relying on a zone rating.
