First identify which tree you mean: British Acer pseudoplatanus needs moist cold pretreatment, while American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) generally does not. Collect the fruits in autumn, keep them from drying out, and use a light, continuously moist sowing medium. If you are extracting American sycamore seed balls, wear a dust mask because the released fine hairs can harm the respiratory system.
Which sycamore do you have?
“Sycamore” names different trees in different places. Check the botanical name, fruit and overall tree form before choosing a seed treatment; a method intended for one kind may not suit another.
| Tree | Common name and fruit | Seed treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Acer pseudoplatanus | Sycamore maple, commonly called sycamore in Britain; paired winged fruits (samaras). | Moist cold stratification. Forest Research describes the seed as recalcitrant and deeply dormant. |
| Platanus occidentalis | American sycamore or planetree; spherical fruit heads made up of small achenes. | Usually no pretreatment. USDA Forest Service and Iowa State Extension guidance says stratification is not required. |
| Platanus × acerifolia | London plane, a related hybrid that may also be called sycamore; spherical fruit heads. | Colorado State University Extension says seed may need 45–60 days of cold treatment. |
These recommendations come from Forest Research, USDA Forest Service, Iowa State Extension and Colorado State University Extension. They are species-specific, not a single rule for every tree called sycamore.
When and how should you collect the fruits?
For sycamore maple
Collect the paired samaras in autumn when they have turned brown. Handle them so they remain moist; do not leave them spread out to dry. Forest Research recommends moist storage around 4 °C when storage is necessary.
#1 Best Overall
- Distinctive Bark: The American Sycamore has a unique and attractive bark that peels off in irregular patches, revealing a mix of creamy white, gray, brown, and greenish hues. Adaptable and Hardy: This tree thrives in various environmental conditions, making it suitable for both urban and natural landscapes, and is hardy in USDA zones 5-8.
- Generous Shade and Broad Canopy: With large, palmately lobed leaves and a broad, spreading crown, the American Sycamore provides dense shade during the summer months, perfect for creating a cozy outdoor space.
- Abundant Seed Production: Each package of seeds can yield approximately 8,125 seeds, allowing for ample planting opportunities and the possibility of growing a small forest of these majestic trees.
- Easy Germination and Care: The American Sycamore seeds require 90 days of cold moist stratification before germination, and the tree prefers well-drained soil and partial to full sun exposure, making it a relatively low-maintenance addition to your garden.

For American sycamore and London plane
Collect intact spherical fruit heads from the tree, or from the ground late in the season where local conditions allow. The heads can be spread in a single layer in a well-ventilated place only until they are loose enough to break apart. The Forestry Commission advises sowing sycamore fruits in autumn soon after collection because even limited drying can kill them.
How do you prepare seed balls safely?
This extraction method is for Platanus fruit heads, not the winged samaras of Acer pseudoplatanus.
- Let the heads air briefly in a single layer until they can be broken apart; do not dry them for long-term storage.
- Crush or rub the loosened heads to release the achenes.
- Separate the seed from dust and fine hairs. Wear a dust mask while handling the material: the USDA Forest Service’s Woody Plant Seed Manual warns that the fine hairs dislodged during extraction and cleaning are a respiratory hazard.
- Move the cleaned seed promptly to sowing or short-term moist, cool holding.
Does sycamore seed need cold stratification?
Acer pseudoplatanus: use moist cold pretreatment
Keep the seed moist and cold through stratification, checking it regularly. Forest Research recommends sowing when about 10% of the seeds have chitted—that is, when a small root (radicle) has emerged. Do not wait for every seed to sprout. For a simple home-gardening approach, sow outdoors soon after autumn collection so winter conditions provide natural stratification, or keep the seed moist through winter and sow chitted seed in spring.

Platanus occidentalis: usually sow without pretreatment
USDA Forest Service guidance says American sycamore seed does not require pretreatment for good germination. Its review reports germination in roughly 15–30 °C, with best emergence near 20 °C under wet conditions. Seed germinates better in light than in darkness, so sow on the surface or cover only lightly.

London plane: check before treating it like American sycamore
London plane is not interchangeable with American sycamore for pretreatment. Colorado State University Extension says London plane seed may require 45–60 days of cold treatment; follow guidance for the identified species rather than applying that period to every Platanus.
How should you sow and care for the seeds?
- Fill a clean, shallow propagation container or seedbed with moistened seed-starting medium.
- Sow American sycamore achenes on the surface or barely cover them so light reaches the seed. Sow sycamore maple seed when it begins to chit after stratification.
- Keep the medium continuously moist but not waterlogged. For American sycamore, provide bright light and temperatures within the 15–30 °C germination range reported by the USDA Forest Service.
- Protect outdoor containers and beds from drying winds, severe frost and predators.
- Move sturdy seedlings when they are beginning to become root-bound. Choose a final planting site with ample space: American sycamore can grow into a very large tree, and extension guidance cautions against cramped urban planting.
If you are preparing a building site or landscape, settle the tree’s location before planting: an unsuitable cramped spot is difficult to correct once a large tree is established. Check local rules before planting or distributing seedlings; restrictions may apply to sale or planting of sycamore, particularly Acer pseudoplatanus where it is considered invasive.

Can sycamore seed be stored?
Avoid ordinary dry storage. Forest Research classifies Acer pseudoplatanus seed as recalcitrant, and the Forestry Commission warns that sycamore fruits can be killed by little drying. The safer general course is to sow soon after collection. If a brief hold is unavoidable, keep seed moist and cool, inspect it, discard moldy material, and do not seal wet seed in an oxygen-free container.
Why might the seeds not germinate?
- The tree was misidentified. A treatment for one kind of sycamore may not fit another; check the botanical name and fruit type.
- The seed dried out. Sycamore fruits are moisture-sensitive, so prolonged drying can damage them.
- Conditions were unsuitable. American sycamore needs constant moisture and benefits from light; its reported germination range is about 15–30 °C.
- The seed lot behaves differently. USDA Forest Service research reports that provenance, conditions around parent trees, temperature and stratification can affect germination speed and percentage. There is no universal germination percentage supported for all lots, so one poor batch alone does not show that every seed or method is unsuitable.
For scale only, USDA Forest Service’s Silvics of North America gives an average of 441,000 American sycamore seeds per kilogram (200,000 per pound). That is a seed-count figure, not an estimate of how many will germinate.
