To organize an IKEA ALEX workspace, start with the layout and the exact desk or drawer-unit model you own: published setups show ALEX used for a corner desk, an office workstation, a vanity, and an L-shaped work area, but those examples are inspiration—not proof that every top fits or that a DIY span is safe. The ideas below focus on practical choices for storage, cable routing, and surface stability.
Start with the exact ALEX model
ALEX products are not all the same size or configuration. For one U.S. variant—the black-brown ALEX desk—IKEA lists dimensions of 39 3/8 inches wide, 18 7/8 inches deep, and 29 7/8 inches high. Its listed maximum load is 110 lb for the desk and 2 lb per drawer. Those figures apply to that listing, not every ALEX desk or a setup assembled from separate drawer units and a tabletop. Check the current listing and assembly instructions for your market and product before planning a layout or loading drawers.
The official listing also describes built-in cable management. If you have a different ALEX product, verify whether it has that feature rather than assuming it does.
16 IKEA ALEX desk organization ideas
1. Sort drawer contents by task
Give each drawer a purpose—such as writing tools, paper, charging accessories, or project supplies—so items are easier to find. Keep heavier items off drawers if they could exceed the 2 lb-per-drawer limit listed for the U.S. black-brown desk.

2. Use clear organizers for small supplies
A creator’s ALEX desk-tour description mentions small clear organizers and drawer organizers. Use that as a cue to group loose items, not as a guarantee that a particular organizer will fit. Measure the inside of each drawer and compare those measurements with the organizer’s outside dimensions before buying.
3. Keep frequently used items within easy reach
Reserve the easiest-to-reach drawer for the tools you use most often, and move occasional-use supplies elsewhere. This makes the storage work around your routine instead of turning every drawer into a mixed catch-all.
4. Make one drawer a project zone
Group materials for a recurring task—such as sketching, paperwork, or device accessories—in one drawer. A defined category makes it simpler to put supplies away when the work surface needs clearing.

5. Give cords their own storage category
Charging cables and small accessories can be stored together so they do not spread across several drawers. Keep cords loosely arranged and accessible rather than forcing them into a tight bundle.

The creator’s description lists an under-desk cord organizer, while IKEA describes built-in cable management on the specific black-brown desk listing. Check your own model first; an extra holder may be useful for a separate-top setup, but could be redundant on a desk with an integrated solution.
7. Set up a corner workspace
A creator describes a corner desk made with LINNMON tabletops and ALEX drawers, with office supplies, cords, accessories, and other items stored in the drawers. Use the example to think about how a corner can combine work surface and storage. It does not establish that every tabletop size or arrangement will fit a room or safely span drawer units.

8. Use ALEX drawer units in a home-office workstation
A 2016 IKEA Hackers project describes two ALEX drawer units as part of a home-office update focused on improving both storage and work surface. The useful idea is to plan storage and desktop area together; the article’s historical price references should not be treated as current prices.
9. Consider a vanity-style surface
A 2025 IKEA Hackers article describes two ALEX drawer units in a vanity arrangement that does not add a separate wood or counter desktop. Treat it as a layout example, and verify the current availability and compatibility of any components you choose.
10. Plan an L-shaped office layout
A June 2026 IKEA Hackers roundup shows ALEX pieces arranged as an L-shaped office desk with storage and surface area. Before adopting the layout, map both legs of the L in your room and confirm that drawers can open without hitting walls, chairs, or other furniture.

11. Check drawer access before final placement
When arranging drawer units as supports, leave enough clearance to open drawers fully and stand or sit comfortably. A layout that looks efficient from above can be frustrating if a chair, wall, or second desk section blocks access.
12. Measure the work area, not just the desktop
Include the chair, walking path, nearby doors, and drawer-opening space in your room plan. A corner or L-shaped arrangement can add surface area, but only if it leaves workable circulation around the desk.
13. Decide whether you have an official desk or a separate top
An ALEX desk listing describes a complete product with a specified top, while many hacks use separate ALEX drawer units with a chosen tabletop. Keep those cases distinct: the dimensions and load values for one official desk are not engineering guidance for a different top supported by drawer units.

14. Check surface stability and the supplied parts
An IKEA Hackers help post about a secondhand setup points to rubber bumpers shown in assembly step 21 as intended to help keep the top from shifting; the post reports that the bumpers were missing from that particular setup. Inspect your own parts and the instructions for your exact product. The report is a troubleshooting example, not a guarantee that every ALEX version uses the same bumpers.
15. Avoid assuming every top fits or is safe to span
Measure the top and supports, confirm how the specific products are meant to be assembled, and follow their instructions and load limits. Published photographs demonstrate that a configuration was made or described; they do not verify universal fit, long-term stability, or structural capacity.
16. Revisit the setup as your storage needs change
If drawers become cluttered or the work surface fills up, adjust the categories and layout before adding more furniture. Keep the most-used supplies accessible, remove items you no longer need nearby, and preserve the clearances needed to work and open drawers.
