Smart Life/Tuya Wi-Fi Light Switch with Tasmota and nymea: Compatibility and Setup

Some Smart Life/Tuya switches can run Tasmota and connect to nymea. Confirm the switch's module and hardware revision first, then add a reachable Tasmota device in nymea:app.

Some Smart Life/Tuya Wi-Fi switches can run Tasmota and connect to nymea, but the app branding alone cannot tell you whether a particular switch is compatible. Identify its exact model, hardware revision and Wi-Fi module first. Once a compatible switch is running Tasmota and is reachable on the same network as nymea:core, nymea can add it through its internal MQTT broker.

Can I flash a Smart Life switch with Tasmota?

Possibly—but “Smart Life” and “Tuya Smart” cover devices with different internal hardware. Tasmota documents ESP-based modules such as TYWE3S, which uses an ESP8266, but says it cannot run on Realtek RTL8710BN devices. If you cannot identify the module inside your switch, compatibility is unverified; do not assume a model will work based on the app or product label.

Start with the exact model and hardware revision, then look for device-specific information that identifies its module and flashing method. Tasmota’s Tuya-Convert documentation describes supported Tuya devices and OTA conversion. Its warning is important: “The fact that you can flash Tasmota on your device does not mean all of its features are currently supported.” No particular switch model or revision is established here, so there is no basis to call an individual product tested or compatible.

Choose a flashing route only after identifying the hardware

Route or hardware What to know
OTA conversion with Tuya-Convert Can avoid opening the switch when the device and firmware permit it. Compatibility depends on the exact module and firmware revision; check Tasmota’s Tuya-Convert documentation before attempting it.
Wired serial flashing Tasmota documents serial flashing for supported hardware, but the board’s boot pins and wiring are device-specific. The TuyaMCU device guide discusses GPIO0 boot mode and possible interference from a separate MCU sharing serial connections.
Realtek RTL8710BN module Tasmota says it cannot run on Realtek devices; do not treat a Tuya label as evidence that this hardware is supported.
ESP module with a separate MCU Flashing the Wi-Fi module does not establish that relays, buttons, dimming or power measurement will work. Device-specific configuration may be needed.

For a wired route, a “3.3V USB to TTL serial adapter” is a generic tool search phrase, not a recommendation for a particular adapter or a guarantee it suits your board. Verify voltage, pinout and board requirements against device-specific instructions. Do not open or wire a mains-connected switch based on generic pin guidance.

Tasmota says Tuya-Convert’s bundled lite firmware omits some features and recommends upgrading to the full build if needed. After conversion has completed and Tasmota is running, its documentation recommends running reset 5 to clear remnants of the original firmware.

Check switch behavior separately from the firmware flash

A successful flash only shows that Tasmota runs on the device; it does not prove the complete switch works as intended. With model-specific guidance in hand, check the functions your switch actually has, such as relay operation and the physical button. For switches with dimming or power measurement, test those functions separately as well. A separate MCU may control some of them and can require device-specific configuration; consult the TuyaMCU device guide rather than applying generic wiring or settings to an unidentified board.

How do I add a Tasmota switch to nymea?

nymea’s Tasmota integration uses nymea’s internal MQTT broker; its documentation does not require you to set up an external broker. The Tasmota device must be on a network reachable by nymea:core, and you need the device’s IP address. The Tasmota nymea guide says the internal broker is enabled by default unless it was previously turned off.

  1. Confirm you have a working nymea installation and that the Tasmota device and nymea:core can communicate on the network.
  2. Check that nymea’s internal MQTT broker is enabled.
  3. In nymea:app, add a Tasmota thing and enter a name and the device’s IP address.
  4. Follow the integration setup. According to nymea’s Tasmota integration documentation, nymea creates an isolated MQTT channel, provisions login details to the device over HTTP and expects it to connect to the broker.
  5. If the device type selection is offered, choose the type that matches its function—for example, a light, roller shutter or blind where appropriate.

The nymea documentation describes this onboarding flow; it does not establish that every Tuya switch exposes the same functions or will be identified in the same way.

What to verify before choosing a switch

  • Exact model and hardware revision, not just its Smart Life or Tuya Smart app association.
  • Wi-Fi module identity and whether Tasmota documents support for it.
  • A device-specific flashing route and instructions, especially if serial wiring or a separate MCU is involved.
  • Whether the physical controls and other switch functions you need are supported after flashing.
  • Network reachability, the switch’s IP address and nymea’s internal MQTT broker status before onboarding.

nymea lists “SmartLife/Tuya WiFi light switch with Tasmota and nymea” among its examples, which demonstrates the general use case rather than compatibility for every switch. The nymea examples page also cautions that some showcased examples may contain outdated installation details.
