Airbnb’s indoor-camera ban is real, but it is not a new rule beginning in 2026. Airbnb announced the change on March 11, 2024, and the policy took effect on April 30, 2024. It prohibits cameras and other recording devices monitoring interior spaces of Airbnb home listings—even if a host disclosed the device, switched it off, or disconnected it.
The rule does not ban every camera associated with every Airbnb-branded listing. Properly disclosed exterior cameras, some doorbell cameras, disclosed indoor noise-level monitors, and cameras in certain hotel common areas can still be allowed under Airbnb’s rules and local law.
What Airbnb’s indoor-camera ban covers
For Airbnb home listings, hosts may not have security cameras or recording devices monitoring any interior space. Airbnb’s rules cover devices that record or transmit video, images, or audio, including devices described as baby monitors or other smart equipment. The prohibition is based on the device and its location, not the host’s reason for installing it.
- Living rooms, hallways, kitchens and other common interior areas
- Bedrooms, bathrooms and sleeping areas
- Guest houses and other interior parts of the listing
- Devices used for security, pet monitoring or property protection
- Devices that are disclosed, hidden, powered on, powered off, plugged in or disconnected
Airbnb’s current security-device rules are published at Airbnb’s security-camera and recording-device policy. The policy applies globally to home listings, subject to applicable local law.

When did the rule change?
Before April 30, 2024, Airbnb generally permitted some visible, disclosed cameras in common areas of home listings, provided they were not in bedrooms, bathrooms or sleeping areas. The 2024 update removed that common-area exception and moved to a blanket prohibition on interior cameras in homes.
Airbnb announced the change on March 11, 2024, saying it wanted clearer expectations and greater privacy for guests. The announcement is available in Airbnb’s newsroom.

What may still be allowed?
| Device or location | Potential status | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior security camera | Potentially allowed | Its presence and general location must be disclosed before booking. It must not monitor the interior or privacy-sensitive areas. |
| Doorbell camera | Potentially allowed | It must be disclosed and properly positioned outside. Some doorbell devices also capture audio. |
| Indoor noise-decibel monitor | Potentially allowed | It must be disclosed, measure sound levels rather than record conversations, and stay in a permitted common space—not a bedroom, bathroom or sleeping area. |
| Indoor camera in a home listing | Not allowed | Disclosure, turning it off or disconnecting it does not create an exception. |
| Hidden camera | Not allowed | Concealment does not make an otherwise prohibited device permissible. |
| Camera in a hotel common area | Potentially allowed | Airbnb identifies hotel common spaces such as lobbies, hallways and restaurants as an exception. This does not authorize cameras in guest rooms or bathrooms. |
Exterior disclosure should identify the device’s general location—for example, the front door, driveway, patio, pool or front yard. An outdoor camera can still violate Airbnb’s rule if it points through a window or otherwise monitors the inside. Enclosed outdoor showers and saunas are specifically treated as privacy-sensitive areas where surveillance is prohibited. See the full security-device rules.
What disclosure does—and does not—permit
Disclosure is required for permitted exterior devices and noise monitors, but it is not a cure for a prohibited device. A statement such as “security cameras on property” should prompt a guest to ask where the devices are, what they monitor and whether they capture audio. Keep that question and the host’s answer in Airbnb’s messaging system.

Disclosure does not legalize an indoor camera in a home, a hidden camera, a camera aimed into the home, surveillance of an enclosed outdoor shower or sauna, or a recording device in a bedroom, bathroom or sleeping area. Airbnb’s platform policy also does not determine whether conduct complies with privacy, consent, landlord-tenant or recording laws in your jurisdiction.
What to check before booking
- Read the listing’s safety information and “Things to know” section.
- Look for exterior-camera disclosures and the stated general locations.
- Look for any noise-monitor disclosure and confirm that it is limited to a common area.
- Ask specific questions in Airbnb messages if the wording is vague.
- Save screenshots of the listing and the written response before arrival.
- Remember that an exterior device is not automatically compliant if it can see into the home or another private area.
What to do if you find or suspect a camera
- Protect yourself first. If a device is in a bedroom or bathroom, appears to be recording, or creates an immediate threat, leave the area if necessary and contact local emergency services or law enforcement.
- Document the scene. Photograph or video the device, its position, cables, field of view and surrounding room. Avoid dismantling smoke alarms, electrical fixtures or other safety equipment, and do not handle the device more than necessary.
- Preserve booking evidence. Save the reservation number, listing screenshots, safety disclosures, host messages and check-in information.
- Report it to Airbnb promptly. Airbnb directs users with safety issues to its 24-hour safety line. You can also use support messaging or chat through Airbnb’s safety-incident reporting guidance.
- Ask about available remedies. Airbnb says it may cancel a reservation, help rebook a guest or provide other support, but any cancellation, relocation or refund is case-specific.
- Contact law enforcement when appropriate. Whether recording is unlawful depends on the jurisdiction, the device, where it was located, whether it actually recorded and applicable consent rules.
- Protect private information. Do not publicly post intimate footage or identifying material. Airbnb’s privacy policy restricts public sharing of private information, photos and videos of community members without permission.
Airbnb may investigate reports and, depending on the circumstances, issue warnings, suspend accounts or remove listings. The policy is not a guarantee that every violation will be detected or that every report will produce the same outcome.

Can a phone or Wi-Fi scan find a hidden camera?
A network scan can identify some devices visible on the rental’s local Wi-Fi, but it cannot certify that a property is camera-free. A camera may use another network, cellular connectivity, local storage or no active transmission; it may also be powered off. Device names can be ambiguous, and a network device is not automatically a camera.
Fing’s guidance describes network scanning as one possible check, not proof. Lens-reflection methods, infrared checks and radio-frequency detectors also have limitations and can produce false positives. A clean scan cannot establish that no camera exists or that a device is being operated lawfully.

Host compliance checklist
- Remove indoor cameras and recording devices before accepting Airbnb reservations; “off” or “disconnected” is not an exception.
- Review baby monitors, smart displays, televisions, security panels and other smart-home devices for camera or microphone functions.
- Update exterior-camera disclosures with the device type and general location.
- Confirm that exterior devices cannot view interior rooms, windows, enclosed outdoor showers or saunas.
- Place noise-level monitors only in disclosed, permitted common spaces.
- Check local recording, consent, short-term-rental and landlord-tenant laws separately from Airbnb’s policy.
What the ban does—and does not—guarantee
Airbnb’s rule gives guests a clear platform standard: indoor cameras and recording devices do not belong in home listings, whether or not a host disclosed them. It does not eliminate the possibility of noncompliance, replace local law, or make consumer detection tools definitive. The practical response to a suspected violation is careful documentation, prompt Airbnb reporting and, where circumstances warrant, contact with authorities.
