Short answer: Ting is a plug-in sensor and cloud monitoring service from Whisker Labs. The official store listed it at $99 on August 18, 2026, including the first year of service; direct buyers then pay $49 per sensor each year to renew. It can warn about electrical signals associated with hazards, but it does not repair wiring, shut off a circuit, replace an AFCI breaker or smoke alarm, or guarantee that every fire will be prevented.
Before paying, check whether your homeowners insurer offers Ting through a participating program. Insurance-provided units may be free, but eligibility, duration and data terms vary by insurer.
What Ting actually is
Ting is a bundled service rather than an offline alarm. The package includes the Ting Sensor, a smartphone app, 24/7 monitoring, notifications about detected electrical hazards and utility-power events, access to Ting’s Fire Safety Team, and a lifetime sensor-replacement warranty while the service remains active. Qualifying hazards identified by Ting may also receive up to $1,000 in coordinated labor assistance. Details are listed by Ting at its product page and inclusions guide.
The sensor measures voltage and other electrical-signal behavior. Ting says its analysis looks for patterns associated with micro-arcs and sparks across a typical U.S. residential electrical system, rather than measuring only the receptacle where the unit is plugged in. Its technical explanation is at tingfire.com/how-it-works-technology.

- EARLY DETECTION: Ting detects dangerous electrical arcing through continuous analysis of over 30 million electrical signals per second.
How one plug-in sensor can cover a home
In a typical U.S. split-phase system, Ting says signals from 120- and 240-volt circuits can be detected through the home’s electrical network, including activity on the opposite phase. That is the basis for the manufacturer’s “whole-home” claim.
Whole-home does not mean a sensor is physically installed on every branch circuit or that every defect is guaranteed to produce a recognizable signal. Coverage also depends on the service being powered, connected and operational. A separately utility-fed main panel generally needs its own Ting. A detached garage, barn or shed with a separately served panel may need another unit; a subpanel fed from the same main service does not automatically require one. Confirm unusual configurations with Ting or a licensed electrician.
What hazards is Ting designed to identify?
According to Whisker Labs, the service analyzes signals that may indicate:
Rank #2
- Stop a Fire Before It Starts: The WiFi fire protection sensor monitors your home's electrical circuits 24/7, detecting potential faults, hazards, and power outages as soon as they occur. With real-time app notifications and LED warning indicators, you stay informed at all times
- Stay in Control of Voltage Changes: No more guesswork—through clear line charts in the GeniLife app, you can easily view voltage peaks, lows, and frequency fluctuations, identify abnormalities, and take more precise corrective actions
- Real-Time App Alerts: Never miss any voltage changes, no matter where you are. Compatible with iOS and Android, the GeniLife app supports multiple user logins and can send instant alert notifications to the whole family at the same time
- Trend Analysis: The app lets you review alerts and voltage trends from the past 7 days, making it easy to determine whether it’s a one-time power fluctuation or a recurring home electrical issue
- Easy Installation: No professional skills required—set up in just minutes. Simply plug in and connect to WiFi, and a single sensor can monitor the voltage of your entire home
- Micro-arcing, sparks and loose or faulty wiring
- Unsafe outlets and switches
- Electrical-panel problems
- Faulty appliances or plugged-in devices
- Overloaded power strips and extension cords
- Some utility-side power-quality events, surges and brownout-related conditions
An alert is an indication for investigation, not proof that a fire is imminent. Ting cannot physically correct the condition.
Recommended Free Tools
What happens after an alert?
- Ting detects an abnormal electrical pattern and sends an app notification.
- The Fire Safety Team contacts or guides you through troubleshooting.
- You may be asked to isolate an appliance, outlet or circuit if doing so is safe.
- Ting can help coordinate a licensed electrician or utility investigation when needed.
- A qualifying repair coordinated through the service may receive up to $1,000 in labor assistance.
The credit is not a general electrician allowance. It excludes arbitrary rewiring, upgrades, parts and unrelated work; review the terms at Ting’s service page.
Price, renewal and what you receive
The current official listing checked August 18, 2026 shows $99 for the sensor and one year of Fire Prevention Service. That page does not establish that $99 is a temporary discount, so it is more accurate to call it the current listed price than a verified sale price.

| Item | Direct-purchase terms |
|---|---|
| Initial purchase | $99, including the first year of service |
| Renewal after year one | $49 per sensor per year |
| Additional separately fed panel | May require another sensor and service |
| Returns | 30-day money-back policy for qualifying new online purchases; annual renewals are excluded |
See the subscription FAQ for renewal details. Ting is not intended to function as a normal offline sensor after monitoring is canceled. Insurance programs may supply it at no charge, but their eligibility, service duration, renewal and data terms are separate; check Ting’s insurance availability information and your insurer’s agreement.
Installation and compatibility
Ting says setup takes about two minutes:
- Install the Ting app and create or sign in to an account.
- Plug the sensor into an open grounded three-prong outlet.
- Use the app to connect it to 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.
- Leave it operating so the service can establish a useful baseline and monitor the home.
A review published March 25, 2026 reported roughly seven days for baseline establishment; treat that as a reported experience, not a universal guaranteed interval.
The listed model is rated 120 VAC, 60 Hz and 0.030 A, measures 3.96 by 2.51 by 1.34 inches, weighs 5 ounces, and lists UL 61010-1 and FCC information. Ting supports typical U.S. single-phase or split-phase homes, aluminum or copper wiring, solar systems and home battery backups. It requires your own utility meter and electric bill. It is not intended for RVs, three-phase commercial power or commercial buildings. Current specifications are on the official product listing.

“Prevents 80% of fires” needs context
Whisker Labs markets Ting as statistically shown to prevent approximately 80%, or four out of five, electrical fires. That is the manufacturer’s claim, referenced to its white paper and more than 1,000 cases; it is not a universal guarantee for an individual house. The result depends on how the study defined a prevented fire, which cases were included and how the service responded.
Ting also says it cannot prevent every fire, including sudden events such as lightning strikes or instantaneous surge damage. The practical description is an early-warning and response service, not a fire extinguisher or automatic disconnect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Ting cannot replace
- AFCI protection: AFCI breakers are designed to interrupt certain arc-fault conditions. Ting presents monitoring and AFCI protection as complementary.
- Smoke alarms: Keep functioning alarms on every required level and outside sleeping areas.
- An electrician: Burning smells, buzzing, heat, discoloration, repeated trips or known defects require professional assessment.
- Electrical repairs: Ting does not open panels, rewire circuits or make an unsafe installation safe by itself.
- Energy monitoring: Ting is not designed to provide appliance-by-appliance consumption or electricity-bill analysis.
If there is smoke, active sparking, a burning odor or a fire, leave the property and call emergency services. Do not open a panel or attempt live repairs because an app issued an alert.

Privacy, connectivity and certification
Ting has no camera, microphone or activity-tracking sensor, but the service still collects account and registration details, sensor and operational information, installation location, app-use data and diagnostics, as described in its technology information. “No audio or video” is not the same as “no data collection.”
The system depends on household power, Wi-Fi and Ting’s cloud service. If the sensor goes offline, check the outlet, router and app instructions, and treat the home as unmonitored until service is restored. UL 61010-1 addresses investigated risks of fire, shock and injury for the sensor; the product listing explicitly says UL did not evaluate Ting’s fire-detection efficacy or performance.
Who is most likely to benefit?
Stronger fit
- Older homes or properties with an uncertain wiring history
- Homes with workshops, servers, 3D printers, HVAC or other high-load and always-on equipment
- Owners who want remote warnings while away
- Households with reliable Wi-Fi and a qualifying U.S. electrical service
- Anyone whose insurer supplies Ting at no cost
Weaker fit
- Buyers who want a one-time purchase with no subscription
- RV, commercial or three-phase properties
- Homes without a grounded three-prong outlet or dependable Wi-Fi
- People primarily seeking energy-use and appliance-load tracking
- Properties with known defects that need immediate electrical repair
- Anyone uncomfortable with cloud-connected monitoring and related data collection
Bottom line for homeowners
Check your insurer first. If Ting is free through a participating program, it can be a sensible additional warning layer. If you buy direct, the $99 first-year package and $49 annual renewal may be worthwhile for remote visibility and guided follow-up, especially in an older or high-load home. It is harder to justify as essential for every homeowner, and it is the wrong product for energy monitoring or automatic circuit shutoff.
Use Ting alongside sound wiring, AFCI and GFCI protection where appropriate, smoke alarms, safe appliance and cord practices, inspections and qualified electrical work—not instead of them.
