Best overall: the OXO Good Grips Prep Y-Peeler. Good Housekeeping’s Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab found it sharp, comfortable and quick across potatoes and other produce. Choose the Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler for the lowest-cost, thinnest peeling, or the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler if you prefer a traditional inline handle.

How these potato peelers were evaluated

Good Housekeeping’s Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab tested more than a dozen manual and electric peelers in 2023. Testers peeled more than 20 pounds of potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots and apples, judging eight data points, including how thinly and smoothly each tool removed skin, comfort and maneuverability around different shapes.

The three products with the clearest hands-on results are the OXO Good Grips Prep Y-Peeler, Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler and OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler. The two remaining Kuhn Rikon models are catalog-listed alternatives rather than tested winners.

  • Watch for: large eyes or deep blemishes that may need a second pass with a knife.

How to choose the right peeler

Pick the handle shape

Y peelers hold the blade perpendicular to the handle and are efficient on long, straight ingredients. Traditional peelers keep the blade parallel to the handle and can feel easier around tight curves, corners and edges. Straight blades are generally preferred for potatoes; serrated blades are better suited to delicate, thin-skinned foods such as tomatoes.

Starfrit Rotato Express Electric Peeler for Potatoes, Fruits & Vegetables
  • Versatile Peeling: Safely peel a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, from potatoes to kiwis and everything in between.
  • Hands-Free Operation: No need to hold or touch the produce while peeling, ensuring a mess-free experience.
  • Easier on Your Hands: A favorite among people with arthritis or limited grip strength—no squeezing, twisting, or gripping required.
  • Non-Slip Stability: The Rotato Express stays securely in place on your countertop, even during high-speed peeling.
  • Spare Blades Included: Comes with two spare blades stored underneath for long-lasting performance.

Consider the blade metal

Stainless steel usually offers better rust resistance and is often dishwasher compatible. Carbon steel can be exceptionally sharp, but it needs prompt hand-washing and thorough drying.

Look for control and an effective eyer

A secure non-slip handle helps prevent slipping during repetitive peeling. An eyer is useful for removing eyes and blemishes without cutting away a large amount of edible potato, but its depth matters: the OXO Prep Y-Peeler’s eyer is effective on ordinary blemishes and shallow for larger ones.

Match care to your routine

  • Choose the OXO Prep Y-Peeler if dishwasher cleaning and rust resistance matter most.
  • Choose the Kuhn Rikon Original if you will hand-wash and dry the blade and want very thin peeling.
  • Choose an inline model such as the OXO Swivel if that grip gives you better control.

Which one should you buy?

For most kitchens, buy the OXO Good Grips Prep Y-Peeler. It offers the best balance of sharpness, speed, comfort, maneuverability and low-maintenance care in the available hands-on testing.

Buy the Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler when price, light weight and minimal food waste matter more than dishwasher convenience. Buy the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler when you specifically want a classic inline handle. Consider the Piranha Y Peeler or Veggie Peeler – Potato only after confirming a current listing, seller and care instructions.
