A loose knot can chip out—or become a projectile—when you saw, joint, or plane a board. Check for cracks, gaps, and movement first: stabilize a loose or loosening knot with clear-drying epoxy and let it cure fully before machining. Sound knots can stay in place and become a deliberate feature in rustic work.
How to tell whether a knot is tight or loose
A knot is the base of a branch where it joined the trunk. A tight knot remains dense and integrated with the surrounding wood. A loose or loosening knot has shrunk away from the surrounding fibers, leaving cracks or gaps; it may move when touched. That movement matters: a knot that comes free during jointing or planing can damage machinery or strike someone.
Inspect the knot before machining. If it is sound and firmly held, it does not need this repair. If it has small gaps but remains in place, inject epoxy into the gaps. If it has come out, clean and re-seat it.
Secure a loosening knot that is still in the board
- Inspect the knot and surrounding wood for cracks, gaps, or movement.
- Use a glue syringe to inject clear-drying epoxy into small gaps around the knot.
- If epoxy is not reaching the gap easily, a shop vacuum can help draw it inward. Protect the hose opening with a paper towel while doing so.
- Let the epoxy cure fully before sawing, jointing, or planing the board.
Re-seat a knot that has come out
- Use a brass wire brush to remove loose bark and debris from both the knot and the knothole.
- Mix a small amount of 5-minute epoxy, coat the knot, and reposition it in the opening.
- Fill any remaining voids with epoxy.
- Allow the epoxy to cure fully before machining the board.
Choose an epoxy finish that suits the wood
Clear-drying epoxy helps preserve the knot’s natural appearance. Opaque or colored epoxy can leave a conspicuous ring around the repair, which may look out of place if the goal is to blend the knot into the board. The guidance here concerns appearance as well as holding the knot: choose clear epoxy when a natural look is wanted.

Make sound knots part of the design
A tight knot does not have to be hidden or removed. Knots can suit pine, cedar, and country or rustic furniture, where visible wood character is part of the look. Plan their locations in the finished piece rather than letting them land randomly in prominent areas. WOOD Magazine describes judiciously featured knots as potential focal points, not simply defects.
